Outdoor Odysseys was a great choice! The guide, Tom, was a lot of fun (but didn't skimp on safety). He knows the area and gave out good info on the local area and natural sights, and worked to make sure everyone's expectations were met. He even made sure the orcas showed up right before the last paddle ended! (Ok, maybe this wasn't his doing, but it was still nice). Even without the whales, it would've been some good paddling. We got to go out at low tide and see purple starfish and other animals not visible at high tide, and there are always bald eagles in the trees. The San Juans are just a nice place to be.
And the food was way better than what I remember from camping as a kid. More fresh food, less granola, although Tom probably had it if we wanted some. This company even provides lunch, which doesn't seem like a big deal until after three days of pb&j sandwiches (which he also had if you must have peanut butter).
Tips- We didn't get back to Friday Harbor until about 10 minutes before the 4:50 ferry, so don't plan on leaving early. The ideal I think would be to stay a night, book a massage, and relax until the next day. Be flexible. We had a really great group, but you never know. Work out the core and shoulders. They say it's fine for beginners, but if you aren't a little strong, I think it'd be tough. Or just bring lots of advil. Don't not do this trip even if you're worried. I'm sure they'd accommodate all abilities.
In short, lots of fun and well worth the effort to get to the islands. Happy paddling!!
