Ghosts of Charleston Night-Time Walking Tour with Unitarian Church Graveyard

Overview
Come walk with us on The Ghosts of Charleston walking tour, leaving nightly from Buxton Books, Charleston’s independent bookstore located at 160 King Street.

Our licensed guides are expert storytellers who lead you through centuries old alleys and paths while sharing stories and solid history from Julian Buxton’s best-selling book, The Ghosts of Charleston. The true tales of intrigue, tragedy, and lost love reveal a rich underside of Charleston’s character that isn’t apparent during the day.

The highlight of your tour is our exclusive nighttime access to the 18th century Unitarian Church Graveyard, where you will experience something magical. The Ghosts of Charleston is Buxton Books’ signature and most popular book-based walking tour -- a favorite of visitors and locals for over 23 years.

What To Expect
1
Tour Charleston
During our 90 minute walking ghost tour, our City of Charleston licensed tour guides recount hauntings and supernatural events from our best-selling book The Ghosts of Charleston. We are fortunate to have many repeat guests, and lots of tales to share, so we switch things up nightly by varying ghosts stories on every tour. There is no experience like walking enchanted Charleston at night, listening to our supernatural stories, and encountering what you will see and hear in the Unitarian Church Graveyard.

Unitarian Church in Charleston
The highlight of Tour Charleston's Ghosts of Charleston Tour is entering the lush, spellbinding Unitarian Church Graveyard built in 1772. Real time hauntings occur only a handful of times a year. However, since 1996, when we started what is now Charleston's oldest ghost tour, spirits in the Unitarian Church Graveyard have reached out to many people on our tour in visual, tactile and auditory ways.

We arrived 5 minutes before the start of the tour after walking 1.5 miles from our rental and asked if there was a restroom we could use prior to starting the tour. The two ladies checking everyone in very rudely looked at us and said "Our bathroom isn't open to the public". Were were like, "Umm, okay, we are about to walk for an hour and a half, is there anywhere we can stop along the way for a bathroom." Yet again they rudely replied that we would not be able to leave the group when we started, then told us we could walk to a nearby hotel to use the restroom but that the tour operator would not wait for us to return. We walked as quickly as possible to the hotel to use the facilities and upon our return noticed the tour at some steps down from the store. As soon as we arrived, the tour operator proceeded to embarrass us by announcing, "Ok, now that everyone is back from the bathroom (in a snarky tone), let's get started late." If we hadn't been with a large group, I would have left right then and there. We proceeded with the tour, but I have to tell you - read the 1 star reviews. This was THE most BORING tour I have ever been on in my life. We had several people that had been on ghost tours in other cities and we literally were all looking at each other in that first 15 minutes like, "Is this really happening??" The tour operator had no personality whatsoever and was clearly just reciting a script. We tried making conversation as we walked to the next place to maybe help her feel more comfortable, so perhaps she wouldn't be nervous and do a better job, but this seemed to just make things worse. She couldn't answer questions about the city or the sites. 5 minutes into the next story, our group decided we had enough and politely informed the operator we were going to leave. We left 40 minutes before the end of the tour. Save your money and time by skipping this one. If you do book - be sure to use the bathroom somewhere else before you arrive (which they should tell you when you book).

Our guide was fantastic, he knew the history and was an incredible storyteller with great presence. The pictures of the ghosts were incredible and I felt like the were real.
