Drove to Williams and took the train to Grand Canyon. We rode in the first class car and were pleased. The seats were very comfortable and snacks and beverages were provided on both trips (to canyon and back). We had roughly three hours to explore, but it isn't really enough time if you are hoping to grab lunch at El Tovar. Food was good but sucked up just over an hour if our time. Obviously you go to see the canyon, so I would recommend a quicker bite to eat Christina was our PSA and was great. Overall, a good experience. Would do it again someday when I have grandkids.

We stayed in Williams and took the train in to the Grand Canyon on one of the Pullman cars. The cars are beautifully restored and comfortable. Our car attendant, Alexander, was knowledgeable and clearly enjoys his job. The 2.5 ride into and then out of the Canyon seemed to go quickly with informative commentary by Alexander, short musical performances and a fun, no pressure, volunteer participant train robbery. We would do it again but would probably stay at the Grand Canyon overnight as the 3 hour visit that the train allows is really not enough time to explore the sights at the south rim.

If you do not like to read long reviews all you need all you need to know is: take the train. You do not need a car on the south rim and some of the best viewpoints are only accessible by bus. The day started with a cowboy gunfight over a card game where the winning hand was five aces and ended with the arrival of the law. Fifteen minutes of bad acting and bad jokes that kept us laughing the whole time. I booked us in the Luxury Parlor Car for the trip from Williams AZ to the South Rim of Grand Canyon NP and back. This is the way to ride a train. I spent the ride north enjoying the bar and standing on the back vestibule taking pictures of the train and desert. The ride south featured a train robbery. As our parlor car attendant said: This is the only train that stops to be robbed. The train robbers were the same characters from the morning shoot out. I had some gold dollars so we set up a poker game. Mom had 5 Aces. The other two hands were 5 Kings and 5 Queens. We delt a hand of 5 2s for the robbers and told them they had to beat Mom's hand to get the gold. We all had a great laugh; especially when one of the robbers pointed to Mom's hand and said: That's the hand I had this morning! Yes, they got the gold and we all had a lot of fun. A special thanks to Dutch for being such a great guy.
