Granite Reef Kayaking Trip on the Lower Salt River

Overview
The trip is a scenic, unguided, four and a half hour kayaking journey down the Lower Salt River. Starting at Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch, you and your group will kayak down a leisurely thirteen mile stretch of river as it moves it's way through the Tonto National Forest. Participants often witness wild horses, otters, birds and other wildlife that cool off in the river during the summer months.

We have the special privilege of being the only kayak rental company located right on the Salt River, so our trips launch directly from our site which you are returned to via shuttle after your trip. Each reservation includes a kayak rental, paddle, PFD and return shuttle to starting site.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to launch time so you may complete waivers, prepare belongings, receive safety orientation prior to the scheduled launch time.  Water, sunscreen and dry bags are for sale. Orientation is mandatory and includes basic paddling, water safety and geography of the river.

Your guides were so great. They were patient and very helpful. It was so great that they were waiting to see if everyone made it through the first set of rapids as I had capsized and they helped me get back in the kayak. When we ended the guide was there waiting and it helped to see him in his red shirt, so we knew exactly where to exit. All staff was great and I will totally come back and do it again!!

This trip was my first experience in kayaking, and I am glad to have gone here! My partner and I must have been paddling faster than the rest of our 10-person group, as we finished the trip about 30 minutes before they did. What a leisurely and relaxing way to enjoy the outdoors and get a little exercise, too! I was amazed at the wildlife I saw, which included horses crossing the river, a crane or resting in the water or taking flight, some ducks, and fish up to three feet swimming underneath me as I floated along! I later learned that the best time of year to kayak is in May when the river runs higher and with more rapids. Speaking of rapids, I did catch some minor ones, and I flipped my kayak and fell out! It was exciting, though, because I had prepared for this moment: I righted my kayak and boarded it again all on my own! I will definitely be kayaking again, and this run was a great introduction to the water sport. I highly recommend it for the beginner kayaker!

Wonderful scenery, encountered dozens of wild horses and other wildlife. Equipment was in good condition, the service was good and the staff were all very friendly. Would suggest a more thorough description of the route and specific landmarks to watch out for, as well as some form of signage at the designated extraction point. All in all a great experience, we will be back.
