Granite Via Ferrata Climbing Experience in Buena Vista

Overview
A Via Ferrata, which means “iron way” in Italian, is a method of mountaineering & rock climbing that’s been used in Europe for centuries. Via Ferrata courses use a combination of ladders, rungs, rails, cables and bridges to aid in moving across and up a cliff face. The Iron Way in Idaho Springs is an assisted rock climbing guided tour where guests clip into cables that run along the side of a cliff. They then move along a designated path of iron rungs and bridges to move across, and along the way they will be required to clip in and out of the cable to progress through the course. This is made possible through an advanced internal locking system in the carabiners. Each guest will have 2 carabiners connected to bungee-style lanyards on their harness. The internal locking system makes it impossible to clip out of both at the same time, insuring that climbers are connected to the cable of the course at all times.

While visiting family in Buena Vista we decided to do the Via Ferrata course.Brandon and Shawn were our guides and were very safety conscious but also fun! I felt very secure from the minute we started. One of our 7 got a bit scared but Brandon was very reassuring and talked her through it and she was glad she was able to complete the course. Especially liked the zip lining, rappelling and climbing portion. We were able to schedule the day of which was great. FYI,The free fall portion of the trip is not going to be used until next year, which was a bit disappointing for some in our group and we felt that should have been disclosed when we booked. My only other suggestion is that they should have a bathroom to use in the building where you check in and not a porta potty. If you have a sense of adventure, you will love the Via Ferrata!

We had a small group of adventurers on the Via Ferrata/zip line/rappelling combo and absolutely loved it! Our guides Brandon, Shawn, and Adrian did an outstanding job of mixing fun into the technical work to ensure we had a safe experience. What an adrenaline rush! There were multiple points to exit the course if desired (in case someone finds this is not their thing) and I’m glad we didn’t use them. We had such a great time we came back 2 days later to raft! YOU NEED TO TRY THIS UNIQUE EXPERIENCE!!!

So glad we did this while in the Buena Vista area! Our teen/young adult kids loved it. I, the mom, was a big scaredy-cat during some of the climbing (even though I was securely clipped onto the safety line!) But i faced my fears and did it... I was even disappointed that the free fall wasn’t open yet. (Should be open soon they said.) Our guides, Crook and Brandon, were awesome! They made us feel safe the entire time and made us laugh a lot too :) Watch the video on the AVA website to get an idea of what you’ll experience.
