Overview

Learn to surf in a group setting with our instructors here at Sea Maui Surf! Your group lesson will begin with a land lesson going over ocean safety and beginner level basic steps to learn everything you nee to know on your lesson! As you are in a group setting all participants must have the ability to swim and feel comfortable doing so in the ocean on their own. For participants not comfortable with their swimming abilities (or under the age of 13) We must require you to participate in a private or semi private lesson to not take away from the others experience during the group lesson.

My husband and I recently booked a lesson with Sea Maui Surf and we loved it! We were celebrating our honeymoon in Maui and our instructor, JT, was really great! He was very positive, encouraging (I was quite nervous at first) and we had some laughs. We also saw a turtle while surfing which apparently is goodluck! We would highly recommend him if you're in the area and interested in learning how to surf and catching some waves! Only regret we have is running out of time and not going back for another lesson with him.

Hey JT was great but the winds were up and it was hard to stay in touch with him once we got out to the break. Probably should have booked a private or semi private lesson because of my age,70. Only tried to catch one wave before returning to the shore because of exhaustion even though I’m a pretty athletic 70. JT our young instructor mentioned we might have to cut it short because of the wind but once I bailed out them another he managed the two remaining students quite well. Just should have admitted that four was too many with the conditions

Aloha! Sorry to hear that you did not find your experience in our group surf lesson to be satisfying! The group lesson setting can be difficult when we have people of varying abilities sign up for the same lesson time slot. This is why we emphasize on our website and during the booking process that the group lesson is a good option for those who feel very confident in their paddling abilities as you are required to paddle back out to your instructor on your own ability. First timers and weaker paddlers are encouraged to sign up for the private lesson option as you mentioned may have been a better option for yourself. Those who are stronger paddlers tend to get more waves and also have the ability to stay out in the water longer. It is not fair to the group when the instructor has to take time from all others in the group to focus more on one student over the others in a group. For those needing more assistance getting back out to the break we always recommend the private lesson as then the instructor is able to focus solely on you and your experience during the lesson! We do keep our instructor to student ratio at no more than four per one instructor in the group lessons to make sure the instructor does not get spread too thin. If you research other surf schools in our area you will see many of them are at a one instructor to six student ratio. So we do pride ourselves on being on the lower end of this ratio to try to ensure a more positive and safe experience for our students. We do hope that if you ever have to opportunity to surf with us in the future you will consider the private surf lesson option to allow our instructor to properly focus on your experience out on the waves! We had such an amazing time. Our instructor Devin was fabulous. He was incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we were successful. Michelle took phenomenal pictures, too.
