A friend and I went on the self-guided tour. I was hesitant because I am pretty overweight and completely out of shape. But, I’m glad I can check this off of the bucket list! So grateful for the rain coat and rain pants that were provided. Be sure to layer!! Quite cold and moist at the crater, gets warmer as you go down. Rained quite a bit in parts. We stopped at Maui Lavender for a quick treat. About 3/4 of the way down, there are some short uphill climbs, but you can walk them (there were three). We finished the ride in about an hour and 45 minutes, even with the treat stop. It was a lot of fun, and the staff were great. Glad I did it!

The bike ride was lovely but unless you have a health concern, go for the self guided tour. It’s all downhill and there’s a bike lane almost the whole time. You go 24 miles which sounds like a lot but I never bike more than 5 and I was fine. My Apple Watch recorded 250 burned calories the whole way, that’s like a 30 min walk on flat ground. Drivers know to watch for bikers, there aren’t very many blind corners. The group was reeeeeeeally slow and the guide directed us, but it wasn’t necessary and we didn’t learn/see anything that google wouldn’t know. We arrived to the sunrise at about 4:30 am, 80 minutes before actual sunrise which was painful but we avoided traffic? I don’t meant to sound sour. The roads were lovely and our tour guide was nice. He did give us advice about the Road to Hana which I greatly appreciated! But the sunrise wasn’t spectacular (we see the sunset on the west coast often) and the guided tour limits your exploring and slows your ride A LOT. TLDR: do the self directed tour unless you’ve got children, health concerns or severe anxiety about traffic. You’re not missing anything in the guided tour.

We had a long drive to go up and you won't start at the top. A very long list and papers you have to sign about securty for a short slow way down the mainstreet. Because there was a family in the group we had to drive superslow. If you used to bike and you look for an adventure, don't pay for this one. A plus is, the guys are really nice and friendly.
