Watching the sunrise on the beach is incredible, but witnessing the sunrise above the clouds hits different. The wait before the sunrise is definitely chilly as every reviewer attests, so you’ll want to wear layers and even pick up the windbreakers the company provides. We rode up the mountain with our tour guide, Billy, who cracked many jokes, shared his knowledge of Hawaiian history, and pointed out all the key stops that we will hit on our bike ride down. The ride up took about an hour and we stopped for a brief bathroom break before entering the park. Once we got there, our group was one of the first to arrive so we got to pick out a nice open spot, unobstructed by other viewers, by the safety bars. After the sunset, Billy took us to a different outlook of the volcano where we could take in the genuine size of the crater prior to taking us to the bikes. Throughout the ride, Billy reminded us of all the key turns and safety precautions so that we wouldn’t get lost on the way down since it was a self-guided tour. While booking, we were hesitant about it being self-guided but did appreciate it after the ride as we could stop wherever and for however long we wanted. On our way down, we did visit the highly recommended local donut shop about 15-20 minutes out from end of the tour for the most delectable pastries and donuts. It was a good spot to rest and recharge before hitting the last leg of the trip. Overall, a not too miss experience - highly recommend requesting Billy as your guide!

Both the sunrise and the bike ride down were an incredible experience. Our guide pointed out the areas to be more cautious as well as turning points. The bakery spot is a must do. DELICIOUS treats a little more than half way down.

Knowledgeable and friendly staff and guides and expertly maintained bikes. We were so tired getting up so early (towards the end of our trip - if we could do it again, we'd probably plan Maui / this bike ride towards the beginning of our trip when the east coast jet lag would work to our advantage). The sunrise over the Haleakala crater was magnificent. It looked like watching a sunrise on a different planet. And the bike ride felt safe and the guides and staff were never far, but I enjoyed the freedom on the way down to stop and go as I wanted on the self-guided trip. I recommend being honest with yourself about your pace and sticking to it. We were the last of our group back but no one cared and it made for a more enjoyable trip for us. My only regret is not bringing coffee with me in the morning. They do not provide coffee so it wasn't until 9 or 10AM when I had my first opportunity to get a cup of coffee.
