Harlem Sunday Gospel Experience

Overview
It is an iconic scene often captured in film and photographs – beautifully dressed women with impressive hats in Harlem heading to church for Sunday worship. But, it’s more than fashion or a show, Harlem congregants consider church worship and church family an integral part of life and a source of weekly spiritual sustenance.  Sunday Gospel in Harlem invites you to be a part of this custom by respectfully joining a local church family for an hour of worship including gospel.

Please note the entire church service is 90 minutes or more in duration. The tour group stays for a hour, departing before the sermon begins. If you wish to stay on your own for the entire service, please notify the tour guide when checking in. If you choose to stay for the entire service you will be on your own and will miss the walking tour.

If this tour is completely booked, please consider the Wednesday Gospel Praise Music option.

Doris was our tour guide for the Christmas Day Harlem and Gospel tour. She was great - very authentic and you could tell she took great pride in the area. The mass was also great - thankfully it was a busy service (of both locals and tourists) and we were made to feel very welcome. It was great fun, and quite moving. At the end, we were surprised that our little one received a Christmas gift - a colouring book and huge pack of crayons. This was definitely our favourite tour in NYC! Our only suggestion for improvement is that the walking section of the tour was longer than expected, I guess dependent on the time of the mass. Not sure if it was just because it was the Christmas day service, but the mass started late, meaning the tour took almost 3hr (and clashed with some of our other bookings). Had we known to expect this, we would have accommodated accordingly.

It was a great experience to be guided by Dorothy who was born in Harlem, respects the culture and people of Harlem and has a lot to knowledge there. Before entering a church, tourists were told the rules for example no food no drink, keeping quiet inside, staying in a line and the timing to go out. Unfortunately some people didn’t follow the rule and Dorothy and the church staff kept saying be quiet please... The singers and band were not professional and the sound system didn’t work well. However i saw it was a real, authentic. Because this is gospel, not a concert. After the gospel ends, she took us to a Harlem walking tour. It was a fun to hear the history and culture from her. The group was too big therefore was decided into two, English and French speaking. When the tour ends, she asked my where I was going and took me to the subway station, giving me advice on how to get in subway safely. I really enjoyed the tour. Thank you.
