Punalu'u Bake Shop

Located at the Southernmost point in the United States, this bakery is a must-visit location. "Welcoming over 200,000 visitors from near and far every year, our bake shop is the most visited bakery in the state of Hawaiʻi. Located on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) in the town of Na‘alehu, midway between Kailua-Kona and Volcanoes National Park, our visitor center is a must-stop! You know you’re close when you smell the sweet aroma of our world-famous sweet bread, malasadas, and baked goods."

Punalu'u Black Sand beach

Turtles! This iconic location on the southern tip of the Big Island is home to the most recognized black sand beach anywhere on Hawaii Island. The beach has black sand made of basalt and created by lava flowing into the ocean which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools. This volcanic activity is in the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Punaluʻu is frequented by endangered hawksbill and green turtles, which can often be seen basking on the black sand.

Not as advertised. Volcano portion was less than 10% of trip at dusk. Very disappointing. Was entire reason for my tour and a total bust

Aloha, Brian. We are very sorry to hear that you were disappointed in the entirety of your trip. Unfortunately, the activity is minimal at the caldera. We are still able to see Kilauea, just no red lava. For that, I personally, apologize. If we could control nature, we'd be a lot more popular than we already are. It is our hope that you can reconsider the 2-star rating though. It is understandable that you are upset you did not get to see lava but there were still six other stops included in your tour.

Will never the trip. Christopher was the perfect guide. Very knowable. While we are not coffee drinkers, the view from the coffee farm was unbelievable. On our stop at the black sand beach, we were able to see 3 green turtles resting on the sand. Always wanted to see them in the wild, so it was a bucket list item. We then went to Kilauea crater. Very impressive. The dinner was equally good. Christopher made sure we had all of our questions answered prior to making our selections in advance. The office staff was very nice and kept us informed on pickup times and attire for the day in advance. Definitely recommend it to anyone that visits the Big Island. Only regret was by the time we got there; the volcano had stopped erupting but what can you do... We will be back for the next eruption....

Aloha! Mother Nature gives and takes when she wants. It is disappointing that you didn't get to see an active flow but we will still be running when you make your way back to the Big Island! How exciting that you got to knock off a bucket list item while on one of our tours! I wish seeing lava would have been on that list, too. Will never forget the galaxy view with lightning. Really enjoy the ocean-view lunch at Kona Joe Coffee Farm; the dinner and interesting talk with thunder and rain in the background is also special and unforgettable. Our guider John is really nice, professional, accommodating and has sense of humor. Would like to say thanks him again. Nice van, nice snacks and dessert. Will definitely consider this company on my next tour search.
