We took a four hour guided hike to Inspiration Point. It was 85 F in Gatlinburg, but about 70 up in the Smokies. Our guide caught salamanders and showed them to the four teenagers in our hiking group. We were one of three families on this hike. The guide was a retired professional park ranger who was considerate and knowledgeable about the plants and animals we encountered on our hike. He was also very knowledgeable about the history of the park. He showed my 16-year old daughter more about botany and biology than she would see in a year of high school science classes. I am very appreciative of what Walk in the Woods provided to our family.

For our second outing with A Walk in the Woods, we were excited to introduce the Smokies to our children and were looking forward to seeing Meghan again. We didn't get very far with the trip, unfortunately. The pop-up thunderstorms kept circling and eventually cancelled our hike just after it began. BUT, we so appreciated Meghan very patiently trying to wait it out so we could get our walk in, all the while showing us and the kids what she could from the trailhead. My kids were very into it (ages 4, 6, 11, 12). We were all disappointed and the experience ended in a downpouring rush back to the cars. The company was amazingly understanding and didn't charge us a dime, only expressing hope that we would try again the next time we're in the mountains. I know we definitely will!

We did the Walk in the Woods Exploring Nature With Kids Walk this past Spring Break. The walk is only 2 hours and is geared for small children. My kids are both 10 years old and loved the experience. They have many different types of walks or hikes on there websites for all levels of hikers. Ours was just a casual pace walk that is great for kids. The guide explains the history of the Smokey Mountains and about the animals and plants that grow in this park. The guide showed the kids signs of animal and bear acitivity along the trail and explained different plants, flowers and trees we encountered. She also explained about many of the edible plants and flowere in the park and had all the members in the group eat some of these plants. This walk is very educational and I would definitley recommend it to anyone with kids. Make sure to bring a camera as you can get many great photos. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes. The guide we had was excellent and commanded the attention of the kids the whole time.
