The shrimp trawling was so exciting for my grandchildren. Captain Spike was so nice to them. First Mate Kaley explained everything they would soon encounter. Deck hand Lexi was so nice also her and Kaylee explained about all the sea creatures we would soon catch. A learning and fun experience for all ages. Would highly recommend this experience. Oh and we got to take some fresh caught shrimp home.

We had Kaley and Hannah as a guide, and enjoyed our time on the boat. In addition to shrimping, you see lots of Dolphins (I guess they are attracted tot he Shrimp nets?) up close as they come right up to the boat within a few feet. After the catch it was very interesting to see all the different sea-life that gets caught in the nets. Stingray, Skates, Jelly-fish Squid, Manta Shrimp various small fishes, small Hammer-head Shark (Bonnet head). The shrimp catch could have been bigger, but we took home what we caught and had a nice appetizer from it. You do learn some of the shrimping regulations and we got to de-head the shrimp ourselves. Overall a fun trip, probably not suited for very young children, because the time dragging the nets was lengthy.

We chose Vagabond cruises in Harbour Town, Hilton Head Island, because of its brochure write up and promises of learning about the shrimping industry and local ecosystems. There was not a promise or guarantee of a large shrimp catch but suggestions that there would be ā€œsomeā€ shrimp. We were also supposed to receive a guest pass to Sea Pines. What we experienced was a two hour boring and hot boat ride where one crew member mumbled some things about how the nets were deployed and the other tried to sell us drinks and snacks and a picture that we never asked to have taken. Our catch was a bunch of bait fish and nine shrimp that were raffled off among the six or so families. All of this for $40 per person plus the $8 gate fee to get on the plantation. This was a complete and utter ripoff. Stay away from Captain Spike and the Tammy Jane.
