Dr. Wagner's Honey Island Swamp Tours
Enjoy this Louisiana Swamp experience — a unique outdoor adventure that is safe, organized, fun, and educational. After a New Orleans French Quarter hotel pickup, travel to the starting location on the West Pearl River, in Slidell, Louisiana. Venture into the gift shop overlooking the Tupelo and Cypress swamp and check in for the tour. Be sure to take a look out of the back window to see if any backyard guests are lurking in the murky waters below. Don’t forget to use the restrooms before embarking on this 2-hour tour throughout nearly 70,000 acres of the Honey Island Swamp, a permanently protected wildlife preserve. While walking down the dock, embrace the excitement of seeing the moss hanging from the gnarled cypress trees and the sweet smell of wild azaleas in the air. There's an undeniable eagerness to explore. Listen intently to the captain’s tales of pirates, Bigfoot, and prehistoric creatures roaming the region while entering the primitive beauty of the Honey Island Swamp. Keep an eye out for alligators, herons, egrets, deer, feral hogs, nutria, raccoons, otters, turtles, and frogs — an abundance of wildlife along the banks and the in the murky waters. Or look up and out for bald eagles, owls, osprey, and other water fowl soaring through the skies. They could be visible one second and gone the next. Those touring Honey Island can easily see why Louisiana is known as the Fisherman’s Paradise. Passing through the Cajun village, where local fisherman reside, see them catching bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, and warmth. Thousands of pounds of crawfish are caught in these waters every season as well. All the tour boats are inspected and approved by the US Coast Guard. These small, custom-built, flat-bottom boats transport approximately 20-24 individuals each. They are operated by experienced local guides who interact with the guests and make the trip both enjoyable and exciting. With the journey back up the river, the captain leads the way to the original departure location. A New Orleans hotel drop-off closes the tour. Note: this tour only offers pick up and drop off from the French Quarter.

Great tour! Our guide was informative and interesting. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and helpful. Our guide made sure we saw alligators, even though they are just starting to come out of hibernation.
Even the driver gave us a great tour as we were driving out from our Hotel

We chose to be picked up in New Orleans since we didn't rent a car and it was super easy. Gene, our driver, has been around the area all his life and gave us some good information about NOLA after Katrina and pointed out places that have never been rebuilt. When we arrived, we went into the store/check-in area... we had been told to bring cash so that was no problem. There were a few things to buy as well. Then we boarded our flat bottom boat and off we went. The river was at flood stage after a lot of recent rain and there had been some pretty cold temperatures several weeks ago which affected the vegetation and meant that there wasn't a lot of land showing. And apparently, the wildlife isn't as active in cold weather. But as we turned into the first bayou, our guide pointed out a small alligator basking in the shallows and then another and another. Plus a water snake! Then we saw a really large gator... maybe 9 feet that was hanging out. We probably saw eight gators in all. As we went in and out of the bayous, we learned about the ecology of the area and also saw where people have mostly seasonal cabins or boats that just float on the river. The trend after Katrina is to build them on stilts. Many had satellite TV! In one bayou, we noticed several other tour boats close to shore. As we got closer, we found out why! There is a large black and white swamp pig that they have named 'Oreo' who hangs out and eats marshmallows and hot dogs that get thrown her way by the boats. There was also a raccoon who was angling for marshmallows as well. On the way back, we saw some huge birds... egrets, blue herons, little blue herons and a wood duck. The whole thing was marvelous. Good information, good sights and well worth the time and the money!
