Following this stop, you will cross over the top of the Dam with closeup views of the architecture, penstocks and Arizona Spillway. When the Hoover Dam was completed early in 1935, it was both the world's largest electric power producing facility and the world's largest concrete structure, weighing a total of 6.6 million tons. We took the express trip to the dam, and Bil C was our driver/ guide. During the drive to the dam, Bil supplied the small group with interesting facts and figures relating to not only the building of the dam itself, but also the history of Las Vegas. He was interesting, witty, knowledgable and supplied us with heaps of bottled water. He also stopped at a couple of look outs and we were able to take some amazing photos. Well done Bil C !!!

I had procrastinated getting a rental car and driving from Las Vegas to the Dam on our own. Doing the math the $49 each included the $15 Fee for the power plant tour and covered what would have been $10 for parking. Factor in the gas and time to get the car and return it and the tour company seemed worth a shot. The downside was concern over time to shuttle around various hotels and being gated on time/schedule. WE DID NOT book directly with SWEETOURS, but apparently were assigned to them by an affiliate which also had good reviews. I would look for them directly. The hotel pickup was relatively painless as Sweetours used three different vehicles to pick up and consolidated into one. This still took about an hour for four stops. As our driver, (James) noted sometimes the hotels were across the street from each other but you had to drive around and through several lights to get at the "allowed" pickup point. The driver was a little early to all stops which got him the reward of doing an additional stop previously assigned another driver. James kept up with a steady stream of info. If we "hit for Millions" I'd definitely consider taking him up on his "private chauffeur license". Angela took us the rest of the way on a full size bus which she maneuvered with precision. There were not any videos during the ride as some companies appear to do. There was plenty of free water. Not a lot of commentary, other than knowing a host of movie star houses, but very pleasant. We were given two hours and were then expected to cross the bridge for 30 minutes for photos. We started with the power plant tour and after earlier reading was very glad to see the elevators working. We walked around the observatory, crossed the bridge and then back and was ready for the gift shop and a bite to eat with 30 minutes left. Unfortunately a local "yahoo" shut down the road above us and we were all cleared out. Angela scooped us up and got us into the outbound traffic. She made an extra stop for a quick restroom break and snacks and returned us to our hotels. Some folks were encouraged to cross the street on their own to consolidate those very unfriendly loops/lights that could take five minutes each. Angela was very professional during the disruption. I don't know how long all the drops took. They do two trips a day on weekdays and only one on Friday/Sat. The Friday timing worked very well. Not too early, back to do other things. I think overall if it's one or two people that the bus is the way to go and the no extra stops/pitches some companies do was a big plus.

Bil C was our dam tour guide, The dam bus was very comfortable, our dam guide was excellent. Bil had many bottles of dam water in a dam cooler on the dam bus for everyone and reminded us many times to stay hydrated - it was VERY HOT. As we left Vegas Bil gave us all a great history of the town and pointed out several landmarks. He was a good dam story teller. The experience was fun and educational as my wife and I are both history buffs. Overall it was a dam great experience.
