Juneau Shore Excursion: Private Mendenhall Glacier Trek

Overview
Spend your time in Juneau on an Alaskan wilderness hiking adventure as you are introduced to glacier exploration along the edge of the Mendenhall Glacier with your own Private Guide! This exhilarating shore excursion will show you a stunning piece of Alaskan nature as you hike through the Tongass Rainforest towards the glacier. Then explore the edge of the glacier on foot where you could see dramatic crevasses and fascinating glacial formations.

The Mendenhall Glacier is receding at a fast pace and due to this we are seeing drastic changes to the surface of the glacier. For this reason, it is not safe to walk on the glacier. This trip will spend time exploring the glacier up close and hiking around the edges of it safely from the bedrock. The edge of the glacier has some of the most stunning features you will find; this is where ice formations, tunnels, and tubes tend to form creating those beautiful blue colors. These features are never guaranteed but do form throughout the summer.

We started out meeting our guide Lea and packing our gear for the Trek, a quick drive to the trailhead and we were off. the initial hike was fairly pleasant through the forest mostly flat for about a mile. At the half way point the terrain changes, mostly rock and is quite technical with steep climbs and declines. Near the Glacier we were able to visit the cave, which safety was discussed by our guide. We were able to trek across the glacier with our guide giving us information and showing us several glacier features. I felt safe the entire trek! We had plenty of stops for snacks and water, which was packed into our gear. I would highly suggest layers as I wore short sleeves most of the hike, but near the glacier and on the glacier the temperatures require sleeves and a jacket. Really good hiking shoes that cover your ankles are a must given the traction needed traversing rocks up and down. This was a fantastic hike. The guide kept the pace, which could be as fast or slow as you needed. Our group of 4 were speedy hikers and enjoyed the quicker pace. This hike is long and technical so prepare ahead of time for your personal fitness to enjoy this beautiful glacier!
