Overview

This wildlife viewing excursion takes you on a journey to see two of the major highlights in Southeast Alaska. You will be guided to the Mendenhall Glacier for a 45 minute self-exploration followed by our wildlife whale watching tour. Once you have had a chance to explore the glacier park on your own, we will take you to the whale watching harbor where you will come aboard one of our state-of-the-art vessels to search for majestic Humpback Whales and other water wildlife we may find along the way. Our expert captains and naturalists are so familiar with these amazing creatures that we can actually guarantee you will see whales in their natural habitat from a safe distance. Our boats are equipped with restrooms and heated cabins to make this journey extra comfortable. Our fleet of fast jet boats all have plenty of outdoor deck space so you can choose to watch the wildlife in the open air or from the comfort of the cabin. What To Expect

Alaska Tales

Our tour representatives will meet you at the main cruise ship terminal and check you in for the excursion. You will board a transport bus with a guide that will bring you to the Mendenhall Glacier for 45 minute stop. Here you will be able to explore the area on your own. The parking lot is a very short walking distance to magnificent photo opportunities, hiking trails, visitor's center, and bear viewing platforms raised above the salmon spawning streams. Once the glacier exploration is complete, we will transport you to the local boat harbor. Where you will be met by our captain and crew who will walk you past the fishing fleet to board one of our state-of-the-art boats built for wildlife viewing. The boats are equipped with restrooms, heated cabins, large windows, comfortable seats, and outdoor decks for viewing. We will then begin a 2 hour journey in search of Humpback Whales and other water wildlife native to the area. You can sit back and relax while taking in the beautiful scenery on the boat ride or assist us in searching for signs of whales including water spouts, tail dives, and whales jumping out of the water. No trip is the same as mother nature decides what to provide for each tour. Your naturalist and crew will interpret what you are seeing and explain the behaviors of the massive and beautiful creatures. At the end of the trip the captain will make an announcement and we will return back to the harbor. Feel free to enjoy a complimentary snack and beverage as you soak up your remaining time on the water. Your driver will meet you at the harbor and bring you back through town to the main cruise ship terminal in downtown Juneau where the excursion started.

Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center

While at the Mendenhall Glacier, you will have an opportunity to visit the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center if you choose to. The center houses exhibits and elevated views of the glacier.

Mendenhall Glacier

You will have an opportunity to explore the area around the Mendenhall Glacier, which includes walking trails and views of the Mendenhall Glacier.

The trip to the Glacier was moderate, maybe 25-30 minutes, and we did see a brown bear in a filed off the highway. The driver was fun. The time at the Glacier was too short but we hiked around and walked through the visitors center. The Whale Watching was great though rainy. We did see whales bubble feeding which was really cool. There were quiet a few other boats in the area and proximity was 125-150 yards as required by law.

When everyone was loading onto the boat to leave, there was two kids that didn’t want to be on the boat and started to cry and scream but the parents and crew didn’t seem to care. We was so excited about this whale watching trip however when we made out first stop to see the whales in the ocean, folks got on top of the boat with their phones out to video record and then two kids started screaming and crying on the boat. The crying and screaming overshadowed the whole trip and many of the passengers was complaining about the kids screaming and crying throughout the trip. Several of the passengers including myself mentioned it to the crew however they said they couldn’t do anything about it. They could’ve easily ask the parents to take the kids downstairs and close the doors until they got their kids under control but that never happened.
