Ketchikan Kayak Eco-Tour

Overview
Take a 4-hour guided kayak tour to Clover Pass, (2 -2.5 hours in the kayaks) with scheduling to fit virtually every cruise ship. This is an amazing waterway with several rainforest islands, about 15 miles north of town. Your guides will get you away from the crowds and often to better weather where you'll paddle around 3 scenic islands where dense rainforest meets the sea. The Tongass National Forest is the largest National Forest in the U.S. and surrounds Clover Pass. Most tours encounter the resident Steller sea lions, seals, bald eagles and other birds, an immense array of intertidal life, and sometimes humpback whales, orcas, porpoises and jumping salmon along the route as well. Occasionally we even see Sitka deer or black bears down at the beach.

While specific wildlife viewing cannot be guaranteed, Clover Pass is second to none for wildlife viewing near Ketchikan and our micro climate, north of town, consistently provides dryer weather and calmer waters than downtown.

We cannot recommend the Ketchikan Kayak Company strongly enough. We were in Ketchikan twice on cruise ships in two weeks and were fortunate enough to do both the kayak tour and the e-bike and hike tour. Both guides and tours were awesome and were the highlights of our trip. The owner, Devon was a pleasure to work with and, because it was end of season, he was able to adjust a tour time just to work with our ship. We were originally concerned about the timing of the tours and being sure we were back to the ship on time. After speaking with the owner, the drivers, and the tour guides we felt completely at ease. Do yourself a favor and book these tours you will not regret it.

I spent a wonderful 2.5 hours with guide David, who is very knowledgeable about kayaking in general, kayaking around Clover Pass specifically, and the wildlife and ocean currents and tides in the area. It turned out, quirk of fate, that no one else had registered for the tour I took. I hesitated, thinking it might be unsafe or boring to go ā€˜alone,ā€™ but I couldnā€™t have felt safer or had a better time. David and I took a 2-person kayak out and paddled all around the area, over 4 miles he said when we were back at the dock. In terms of paddling, he followed my lead and let me set the pace, and together we decided what we wanted to get close to in the boat. We saw gorgeous bald eagles, noisy groups of sea lions, salmon jumping up stream (we paddled over to a stream coming down through the trees), a pod of dolphins, and probably some whale activity under the surface, though we werenā€™t 100% sure. He has a keen eye and easily called out different kinds of birds and wildlife that I wouldnā€™t have noticed otherwise. Eric the van driver was also great, he even added a special stop at Totem Bight State Park on the way back, just because I had mentioned it when he picked me up earlier and we had a little extra time. The company provides all the equipment you need and makes sure you feel comfortable using it ā€“ just bring your camera. Oh, and they serve healthy snacks afterwards. I donā€™t think you can go wrong with these folks ā€“ theyā€™re terrific. Highlight of my trip to Alaska (right after Glacier Bay šŸ˜Š) !

Our tour was excellent, David was a fantastic guide. We spotted some whales spouting halfway through our tour, so we headed towards them and ended up getting an excellent view of them bubble feeding. The scenery is incredible and the time flew by. Highly recommend kayaking and highly recommend this company.
