Rented a double kayak for my friend and I (good to split the work) and we had a blast. They took us into the cove one kayak at a time, we saw seals and even had a whale sighting! Our two guides took us a tiny bit further so we could whale spot and we saw one breach the water! Both guides were very informative and funny. If you want to take photos, put it in a waterproof pouch because I put mine in a tied plastic bag and it ended up getting water damaged and broken.. Otherwise, leave it in the lockers they provide. You can rent a lock, or use a cubby to leave your towels. Their facilities is clean (changing rooms and bathroom available), the staff are very friendly. Overall it was a great experience!

Iā€™m an avid paddler and wanted to do a little sight seeing while on business in San Diego. HBK (Hike, Bike, & Kayak) did a great job with the tour. The staff is friendly and professional, my guide Sarah was very knowledgeable and funny, and the tour of the La Jolla wildlife reserve was beautiful. Thereā€™s no expertise in paddling required. The sit on top kayaks are very stable and great for beginners. For more advanced paddlers, the boats and gear probably arenā€™t as fancy as weā€™d prefer but you also donā€™t have to drag it through the airport or down to the beach. The tours only a couple of hours, so the track and efficiency of the yaks no big deal. La Jolla Cove is definitely a ā€œmust seeā€ if you love the water. Big Hand to HBK and Sarah! Great fun.

This was a very nice and well-run organization. It definitely added to our experience of the San Diego coastline. We saw a dolphin and a lot of seabirds. Full marks! I would recommend that parents coming with kids have some experience kayaking, ideally in the ocean. My wife and I had done some river kayaking (tandem with kids), but had not previously dealt with strong winds and waves, and struggled a bit to keep up. This meant we missed some explanations, and often felt we were slowing the group down. Also, those of us with kids were not able to paddle inside the caves due to safety concerns. I totally agree with the instructor's judgment, but I guess I did not realize that parent/child tandems would be unable to participate fully.
