Overview

When you tour with non-profit Save Our Cemeteries you are helping to preserve and protect the historic cemeteries of New Orleans. Our tours are small and historically accurate.

Lake Lawn Metairie cemetery was named by Forbes as one of “America’s Best Cemeteries.”

This picturesque cemetery boasts some of the grandest funerary architecture and sculpture in the US. Live oaks surround greek temples, gothic and Islamic style tombs, obelisks, and marble monuments with beautiful ironwork and stained glass.

The resting place of many of New Orlean's most influential and notorious citizens, Metairie Cemetery holds the graves of over 9,000 people on 65 landscaped acres. Nine Louisiana governors, seven New Orleans mayors, 49 kings of Carnival, and three Confederate generals rest alongside madams, brothel owners, bandleaders Louis Prima and Al Hirt, vampire writer Anne Rice, and former Saints and Pelicans’ owner Tom Benson.

Glenn was a great and knowledgeable guide. Our time spent with him was very informative as well as interesting. His stories of the families and their loved ones brought meaning and a better understanding of the history and also showed the sadness associated with it all. He was very understanding of the heat and found ideal spots under trees in the shade to share his knowledge. It was excellent experience and I would recommended Glenn to anyone wanting a great experience.

We enjoyed an amazing tour with family and a few others on a rather warm morning. Glenn was a true gem - funny, full of stories and important history, and fantastic at finding shady spots for us to stand while listening to him. I would gladly have spent more time with him - whether in the heat or over a cup of coffee - he has so much to offer and contributed to being a highlight of our long weekend trip. The cemetery, like the city itself, holds much history and numerous examples of grand workmanship. We greatly appreciate the Save Our Cemeteries group for hosting such an amazing tour and being a true nonprofit dedicated to the betterment and maintenance of the amazing resting places in the area.

Glenn was an excellent guide and we thoroughly enjoyed our tour. We learned much more than expected and the tour was filled with many historical anecdotes. For a very hot morning in September, Glenn did an outstanding job keeping us as shaded as possible without missing anything. I would highly recommend.
