Overview

It’s an encounter unlike any other as you spend the morning floating gently in the endangered manatee’s favorite lounging spots on the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. These friendly Florida herbivores just love to nuzzle, grip, and cuddle your kayak for a truly magical morning.

The kayaking adventure continues with a search for playful dolphins, often fishing actively nearby. As if beholding these majestic mammals in their element isn’t enough, you’ll likely enjoy many other Florida natives including pelicans, osprey, roseate spoonbills, horseshoe crabs, and even the occasional gator.

As visitors in the manatee’s natural habitat, you can expect to observe and study the famed Sea Cows. Keep in mind that we seek not to disturb, overwhelm, or disrupt the manatee’s natural behaviors, but rather let you experience them on their terms.

What to bring:
Clothes you don’t mind getting a little wet. Towel (left in car)
Water Shoes – sandals or Crocs that can be worn in the water
Bring an extra change of clothes just in case
Camera & Dry bag (optional) These are fairly useless to capture bioluminescence, but great for capturing people.
Bottled water, Snacks
Any special personal paddling gear if you like
You may bring a flashlight, though we will provide a safety light.

We took the 10AM trip from Haulover Canal in Titusville. Our trip didn't get off to the most auspicious start as it was pouring with rain. But our guide Caleb was happy to wait a few minutes until it slackened off a bit, and then we set off. The first part of the trip was around a nearby island that was teeming with birds of all shapes and sizes. Caleb was very knowledgeable about the different birds and knew some good spots for viewing. The highlight was a nest of what I think were herons feeding their babies. After this we headed off inland up the canal which was the highlight for us. We quickly came a cross a large group of manatees near a dock. They seemed to be everywhere. A couple of groups of them seemed to be getting very up close and personal so we think they were mating manatees. This could get quite vigorous though so we didn't investigate too closely! Caleb showed us other manatees just hanging out under the dock drinking the rainwater dripping from the dock. Caleb explained this was because they like the fresh water rather than the brackish water they were swimming in. later on we went back into the bay watching the groups out there. The manatee seemed totally unbothered by our presence. We didn't approach them closely, but they would come up to us. One came close enough to soak us with a splash of their tail, and another nearly tipped us in. I don't know how long we spent watching them, it felt like forever, they were just such incredible creatures. This was a real highlight of our trip to Florida. Big thanks to Caleb for showing us around.

Several if us had not kayaked prior to this tour and our guide made us feel totally at ease. We saw dolphins and several manatees. Our guide was engaging, knowledgable and humorous. We had great weather. It was a great time. We will do it again.
