The Matanuska Glacier is one of Alaska's premiere destinations. Ā At 27 miles long and 4 miles wide it is Alaska's largest glacier accessible by road. Ā It also is boasts one of the most accessible areas to walk on of any glacier in Alaska. Ā Marvel at ice that formed thousands of years ago high in the Chugach Mountains.

Matanuska Glacier
Your day will start with a magnificent scenic drive along the Glenn Highway with stunning mountain vistas and plenty of time for photo stops. Ā Next we will drive to the toe of the glacier to dawn our ice cleats and begin exploring the glacier by foot. Each day is unique due to the dynamic nature of the glacier. We generally spend two hours and walk three miles on the ice.Ā  After exploring the glacier we will have lunch at a local eatery with stunning views of the glacier and surrounding scenery.Ā Each tour will be customized to suit your groups interest. This is a once in a lifetime bucket list opportunity to explore glacial ice!

This was by far one of the best parts of our trip! Our tour guide Scott picked us up in a large comfortable bus at our hotel and was just a burst of positive energy who was nice and extremely knowledgeable. The drive itself was beautiful and Scott taught us so much along the way and even stopped so we could take a photo with Denali Mountain in the background since it was a clear blue day. Once we got to the Matanuska Glacier and checked in, Scott had all the winter gear we could need to be comfortable and prepared. The views were outstanding, like nothing we had seen before. As we went along the hike he explained the glacier formations and the different types of ways it evolved before our eyes. We of course went into some glacier caves and my oh my was that epic, there are no words! The pace of the hike was perfect enough to build up an appetite to our lunch at the cutest restaurant that makes their own bread and was so friendly! If you are thinking about booking it, stop, do it, this is completely worth it! Thank you Scott and Greatland Adventures for our epic tour for our one year anniversary, we will never forget it!

If you're going to Anchorage, you better be ready for some cold and snow. And if you're ready for that, why not go hike around on a glacier! Bill and Sydney were awesome guides, wrangling us tourist-cats and keeping us on track (and safe) while having fun with us at the same time. Having taken this tour in the winter, we are able to walk across the froze lakes right up to the front of the glacier. We had the chance to explore 4 to 5 "features" and fully take in the experience. Because the glacier is constantly changing, no two days are the same so every tour has a unique experience. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Anchorage!
