The Matanuska Glacier is one of Alaska's premiere destinations. Ā At 27 miles long and 4 miles wide it is Alaska's largest glacier accessible by road. Ā It also is boasts one of the most accessible areas to walk on of any glacier in Alaska. Ā Marvel at ice that formed thousands of years ago high in the Chugach Mountains.

Your day will start with a magnificent scenic drive along the Glenn Highway with stunning mountain vistas and plenty of time for photo stops. Ā Next we will drive to the toe of the glacier to dawn our ice cleats and begin exploring the glacier by foot. Each day is unique due to the dynamic nature of the glacier. We generally spend two hours and walk three miles on the ice.Ā  After exploring the glacier we will have lunch at a local eatery with stunning views of the glacier and surrounding scenery.Ā Each tour will be customized to suit your groups interest. Highly recommend Greatland Adventures and I look forward to enjoying another one of the company's adventures when next I visit Alaska. Christmas Eve, my 75yo mom and I went on the Matanuska Glacier Winter Tour. Beyond the scenery on the drive there and back, the guides (Michael and Sydney, I believe) were incredibly informed, friendly, and welcoming. My mom was nervous to get in the van for the drive, but she was put right at ease from the first moments. The guides were supportive and attentive to everyone's needs. Really enjoyed hearing about the area's human, geographical, hydrological developments over the millennia. Time on the glacier was wondrous and beyond expectation. At the glacier, my mom ended up deciding to stay behind and wait for the group, as she was afraid the terrain would be too difficult to navigate. Even though she didn't go on the glacier, she ended up seeing a moose and her calf. She had been hoping to see one since we arrived, so it was truly fortuitous.

Steve and his team did an amazing job coordinating the glacier tour. Our tour guide for the day, Jonathon, was super knowledgeable and attentive to our questions/curiosities. We also attempted to see the northern lights as part of the Northern Lights Tour. Although we weren't able to see them, due to unfavorable weather conditions (thanks mother nature), Steve and his team were professional and kept us informed about our chances to view the lights. We definitely recommend this tour company! We had a great experience!

We are really glad you had a great time on the glacier. Apologies that we couldn't get you out on a tour to see the lights. We strive to only operate this tour on nights that have a reasonable expectation of seeing the lights. We often cancel the tour due to cloudy skies or low aurora activity. When this does happen a full refund is given for the tour. We do recommend staying at least 3-5 nights to increase you chances of being here on a favorable night. We hope you can come back and join us in the future.
