Middle Fork American River: Tunnel Chute (Class IV+ Whitewater)

Overview
This wilderness whitewater run offers some of the best-advanced whitewater in the state. Rapids start out from the get-go, as boats soar over the beautifully quartz-lined river bed. Within the first mile and a half, you’ll run one of the biggest rapids of the day, the legendary “Tunnel Chute”. In 1889 gold miners blasted out this chute and tunnel in order to mine the pre-existing river bed. This rapid makes this advanced run a trip you’ll never forget. Halfway through, the river slows down creating perfect opportunities to swim, play games, and absorb the warm summer sun as your guides fix a gourmet lunch on a sandy beach. The trip ends with more high adventure rapids as the river gradient steepens for an exciting finish. Steep drops await, technical boat maneuvering is a must, as you and your crew jet through the rapids. Don’t hesitate to come on this classic California whitewater adventure. You’ll be glad you did.

It was a wonderful day on the Middle Fork American River!!! Our guide, Pauley was AMAZING!!! He was knowledgeable about the river and the upcoming rapids, told us about his approach and what to expect, gave us a great history lesson along the river, and put the few of us who had high anxiety at ease as it became clear as the day went on that he had a superior level of expertise. This was an EXCELLENT activity outside that allowed for safe social distancing. Lunch was provided on the side of the river and it was fantastic. We were NOT disappointed. The scenery was beautiful. My daughter jumped out and floated alongside the boat at a point where the river was calm. This is a great tour for families with older children as it is a perfect combination of plenty of exciting rapids at the beginning and at the end, but a calm segment in the middle. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!

Perfect day on the Middle Fork River-Full Day adventure! We have been rafting 5 or 6 times in the past and this trip was by far the best experience yet. This is a true full day trip. On the river for 7 hours including a break for lunch. Worth every penny. Our guide, Pauly, was the best! He is experienced and kept us on track throughout the several class 4+ rapids along the way. Super fun trip! All crew at Tahoe Whitewater is pleasant and helpful. Highly recommend.
