Middleton Place
Two of America’s Founding Fathers called Middleton Place home: Henry Middleton, a president of the First Continental Congress, and son Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Now a National Historic Landmark, it is home to America’s oldest landscaped gardens; a House Museum filled with Middleton possessions; Plantation Stable Yards with heritage breeds; and Eliza’s House, a freedman’s dwelling that serves as the centerpiece of Middleton Place’s interpretation of the lives of the enslaved people who built the property. Sit back and relax on a luxury, air-conditioned motorcoach as you enjoy a short video provided by the Middleton Place Foundation on your way to the plantation. Upon arrival to Middleton Place, you will have the opportunity to explore all of the historic sites on this 65-acre plantation such as the House Museum, Gardens, Plantation Chapel, Parterre, Plantation Stable Yards, and Eliza's House.  Enjoy a three-course Low Country Lunch at the Middleton Place Restaurant  during your visit. Inspired by the recipes and spirit of former resident chef and renowned southern chef Edna Lewis, The Middleton Place Restaurant offers traditional Low Country favorites made from fresh, local, organic ingredients, harvested from the on-site organic farm and gardens. I should say upfront that my wife and I visited Middleton in late December, so it was cold and since at least half our time was spent outdoors, the wind made it feel even colder. Also, it being winter, nothing much was in bloom and the grass was dormant. However, having said all that we still had a wonderful visit and would highly recommend a trip to Middleton. The grounds are lovely in spite of the cold. There are also numerous period shops on the grounds where a docent or a skilled craftsman was there to discuss the particulars. One building was of much interest because it had a large chart on one wall that showed the many slaves that were owned by the Middleton family through their generations up to 1865. The chart included each slave's name and the price the slave was valued at. This required a tremendous amount of research, but was very much worth the effort. As our docent put it, people who were lost to history have now been rediscovered. I should also mention that the Middleton Foundation does not attempt to 'sugar coat' the injustice, pain and suffering of slavery. The people involved describe it as it was. There is only one Middleton house remaining on the plantation and the house tour was magnificent for those who enjoy 18th and 19th C furniture, art and decorations. We saw some very fine examples of 18th C furniture and the docents inside each room were able to describe and discuss each piece. In between we had lunch at the on-site restaurant as part of our tour. It was outstanding and I recommend the fried chicken. And lastly, our driver with Pineapple was excellent. It takes around 30 minutes to reach the plantation from Meeting Street. We enjoyed spending an hour with him.
