Mission San Luis Rey

Discover a fascinating chapter in California history during a visit to Mission San Luis Rey, located just north of the San Diego downtown. This admission, valid daily between 10am and 4:30pm, includes access to the on-site museum, mission grounds, and a self-guided tour, during which you can explore the National Historic Landmark at your own pace. Founded in 1798, Mission San Luis Rey was once known as “King of the Missions.” Among the largest and most prominent of the 21 Spanish missions located across California, it’s famous for its sprawling lavanderia archaeological site, as well as its sunken gardens, wooden dome and cupola, and other unique architectural features. In the museum, discover Native American, Spanish, and Mexican artifacts, and learn about the history of Spanish influence in California. Today, the mission doubles as a home to Franciscan friars and is a functioning retreat center; its church celebrates daily Mass at noon, which visitors are also welcome to attend.

This is one of many missions I have toured in CA, however this one because of its size, landscaping and well maintained exterior walls was especially stunning on a sunny day with blue sky as the backdrop to white stucco walls. The interior is unique in that the dome once was lit with candle as a sort of light house to those looking for the mission at night, The entrance fee is $7 without tour, however the man selling tickets provided very good information about highlights to look for once inside the museum.

Viator made it very simple to purchase a ticket in advance. The Mission is piece of artestry restored from the splendor of the 1700's. So much history but also sadness in the evolution of abandonment and disrepair after the Spanish American War. This is a must see if you are visiting the area. It is definitely a place of reflection.

The mission has free parking. I have been to about half of the California Spanish missions and this one has one of the largest land areas. The admission office and gift shop are together and the museum is next to the admission desk. Admission to the museum is $7 (discounts are available for seniors, etc.). The church was open and is an impressive place to enter and observe. It is the second most southern mission in California and about 10 minutes from Intestate 5. If you are interested in history, it is well worth a visit.
