Misty Fjords National Monument
Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

We signed up for a flight-seeing tour in Misty Fjords with Island Wings Service. First, we decided to do this on our own, while making a stop on our cruise. This was not an excursion done through our cruise line. Island Wings was super responsive to set up the flight that fit our schedule. Pricing and payment were likewise simple. Staff was easy to work with. Our pilot (and the owner of the company) was Michelle. She was great to fly with. First, she was extremely competent and experienced. As a former Navy pilot, I felt most comfortable with her and the aircraft. they clearly take great care to make safety first. I would NOT hesitate to take this tour. The tour was magnificent. Michelle told us a lot about what we were seeing ... to complement the incredible scenery and perspectives that you can only go get from the air. She was not just a competent pilot but also very knowledgable about the geology, flora & fauna and wildlife in the area. A highlight was landing and taking off in an alpine lake - see attached photo. It was a dramatic experience and scenery was nothing short of breathtaking. I strongly recommend Island Wings!

Weather in Alaska must be very fickle and I've now idea what is normal. We traveled in July/Aug and the 60's 70's felt so good compared to the 100's we had departed in the Mid-Atlantic. We had been told by so many guides we were having FANTASTIC weather! It hardly ever rained yet when up in Denali, cloud cover never lifted to show the mountain and did not afford us a chance to go for a flight we wanted to do. Seemed like a lot of overcast. So once we got to Ketchikan and had real sun this was great as we were booked for a flight into Misty Fjord with Island Wings Air Service. It looked like it was going to be a great day! We had considered booking via the ship but the trips sounded light with time in a boat and only a short ride in the air. Other trips were fluff with searching for bears and eating; we had seen lots of bear and did not want to pay for an overpriced meal. Let's focus on a flight! So looking at reviews of contractors Island Wings seemed to have a very high rating and good comment. Michelle is the only pilot and she has only one person who books trips in her office so it just seemed like a tight operation. We talked to them on the phone a few times and we got nothing but a good solid feel. We got picked up buy the docks only a short walk from the ship and it was a short ride to the dock where the plane was expected. I'd talked some warm shirts but we learned it is warm and we did not need anything and you can leave stuff in the dock office. Small folks get the best seats in the back of the plane. This seems counterintuitive but you have a good window and are away from the wing. Fat me got a ride out in the row behind the pilot, it is a big seat but you have the wing and strut holding the wing up in photos. Mid trip we landed and pulled up to a public dock in the middle of nowhere along with 3 other planes, took photos and enjoyed the quite. On the trip back I got to ride in the co-pilot seat and when it was cool the photo point of view is not so good. You can't look out the front so much as the prop strobes. Sun glares all over the place and the wing is in the photo out the side. It was very neat to watch her fly and you can listen to the air traffic on the radio. On the ride back to our ship we learned they get almost all booking via the word of mouth via ratings on TripAdvisor. They don't book via the ships or local ads. Now that is standing on what you do! Can't say enough about how swell Michelle is; she runs a great trip and you will feel very safe in her hands. She has been running an operation with that plane for 17 years and I wish her the best of luck.
