Museum of Broadway

Overview
We’ve brought together a team of internationally renowned artists, designers & historians — both from Broadway & the experiential world — to design the museum. It will be educational, but told in a fun, accessible, brightly colored way! We are going to share information about the history of the Broadway theaters through projection mapped videos, the timeline of Broadway told through immersive environments that will leave people’s Instagram feeds full of great photos and give guests a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a Broadway show by spotlighting all the jobs and what it takes to create a Broadway show. There are other surprises and sections of the museum that will excite fans young and old!

The museum is fantastic! If you have any interest at all in theatre, don’t pass this up. History, music, costumes, sets, backstage happenings, and more - fascinating! Walking through it made me want to “take in a show!” I hope they rotate the shows that are highlighted, to keep things fresh. My only concern - and it’s a big one - is that the museum is not ADA accessible. Lots of stairs and NO elevator.

The museum was interesting. There was a lot of material to read (historical timelines, photos, playbills, etc. etc.). There were also some interesting set displays from different shows and plays - some were even designed so you could take your picture on the set. There were props, costumes etc. on display. If you really like this type of exhibit and wish to read much of what was on display, it can take a few hours to go through the entire museum. Since it is fairly new, it wasn't crowded the day we were there and we spent several hours taking our time to see everything. The ticketing process is awkward - can only be done online, even if go to the actual museum - they direct you to use your phone or one of their tablets connected to the internet. I was surprised at the added ticketing fees - was much like when purchase concert tickets - which made the tickets more costly than advertised. I think the price is rather high for this type of exhibit - with the added fees it was $94 for 2 adults and there didn't appear to be any senior/AAA etc type of discount..

We visited the afternoon of opening day after buying tickets for a show later that night. The docents were always trying to be helpful. The actual exhibits included some costumes of interest and a few rooms dedicated to shows. I particularly liked the West Side Story room. Most of the museum however is made up of walls with photos and historical information that one could get on websites. Some was more interesting than others. The final area was dedicated to videos of the behind the scenes jobs. Overall very good for fans of live theater through history but others may be bored and regret the $46 fee.
