We went when the occasional "special" exhibit was one that followed the life of an Irish born soldier who served with the English during the Revolutionary War. It was fascinating to see the early years of our nation through that perspective. Beyond this special event, the standard galleries were incredibly well organized - to help you follow the chronology of the time. The exhibits included a mix of photos, videos, and text. We opted to rent audio devices which helped at times but weren't absolutely necessary. Each exhibit had an abundance of text to provide background. I was pleased to see that the exhibits clearly noted that, despite the fact that independence was achieved from Britain, the plight of Native Americans and African Americans continued (continues). A must visit if you have a few days in Philly. It is likely not a good visit for very young kids but teens and older should enjoy it. The staff were also very pleasant and very helpful.

Wow. This would have been a great visit to a museum but there were so many kids groups with tour guides yelling at them to listen or gather. We could not even hear the audio tour recorder we rented. Just not pleasant. Call ahead to see if the kids groups are planned before you go.

I've spent a lot of time visiting Valley Forge National Park, and it is a great site to visit if you want to get a feel for a part of the Revolutionary War (and if you are out near West Norriton/Norristown). But for another more detailed look into the overall war and the peoples involved, the newer Museum of the Revolutionary War is a must. Located in the historic area of Philadelphia it initially appears to be a small building with only two floors of exhibits. This is somewhat deceiving because the museum has well laid out paths on both floors of very detailed exhibits describing the human side of the war. There are terrific maps of various battles and events, great (and large) drawings of key persons, drawings and historical memorabilia, paintings, and large, fact-filled descriptions of persons and events that focus on details. This is not a place to zip through; it's a place to rather leisurely drink in the history. Plan at least half a day to get around and be entertained and educated. There are two theaters that show short films that are close to brilliant. Try to see them both. I understand there is a basement floor that is used for children's activities, but we didn't get down there. The museum also has a small cafe which serves really good food at fair prices. People in costumes abound, and they are friendly and I think give little "tours" of various areas. I know I'll be back because it has so much to offer in a little space. Another treasure for Philadelphia.
