I didnāt really know what to expect going in, was just excited to meet some dogs and go dog sledding. I chose this tour because unlike all the others I found, you actually get to drive the sled if you want, rather than just ride in it.
I did love meeting the dogs and going dog sledding, but I was excited to also find that AK Sled Dog Tours is an up close look at an Iditarod winning machineā and Iām not just talking about Dallas Seavey (who I didnāt meet). The entire lifecycle of a winning sled dog is accounted for, from breeding and early life to retirement. You even get to be part of it by exercising some of the dogs with your turn on the sled (and help finance the operation by purchasing a ticket). The dogs are happy and so are the staff, pretty much all of whom are preparing to run the Iditarod themselves. I felt like the tour I was on, while given skillfully by nice and genuine folks, wasnāt really the point of what they were doing, which was the best part.
And any review would be incomplete without saying the puppies are freaking adorable to play with.
