I was glad we came to visit the Seaport museum. It offered up enough of a cross-section of maritime history to be surprisingly engrossing. I trained in marine zoology (and my research supervisor was a whale biologist) but still found enough nuggets to satisfy my curiosity for an entire morning. As the other reviewers noted, the whaling ship (and the various re-enactments / demos) that go along with it are a major highlight. Personally, I found the other segments of the Museum (e.g the cooper, the instrument room, the exhibit on 'streamlining', the life of a sailor during those times) also quite interesting. The Museum grounds go on for a bit, so allow about 2-3 hours if you plan to do a 'quickie' tour. If you engage with the exhibits, budget around 5 hrs. Insofar as parking logistics : if you plan to walk into downtown Mystic, park at the South lot. It'll be a 15 min walk . If you find availability only in the North lot, tack on another 10 min.

What a gem of a location! Learn about the local history and importance of whaling and trade. There are many hands on experiences to learn about science. You can try your hand at the old printing press, candle making, watch the smithy create something new the old fashioned way. There is a great area for the smallest in your crew to learn as well. There are many different boats on display as well as the inner workings of a typical New England town. Visit the apothecary, the local church, a general store, smithy, printers, carvers and more! ALSO worth mentioning is the GREAT cafeteria. You can get fish and chips, clam strips, as well as kid favorties and it is so fresh and reasonably priced. That is AMAZING and noteworthy as usually I have found that eateries at similar places like zoos or museums leave something to be desired for the high price tags.

We were lucky enough to visit the museum by boat and docked at the museum. This allows you to walk the grounds at any time which is quite special. One definitely needs a full day to even attempt to see everything. One really cool thing about this place is that it is not just a museum dealing with the past...it is a real shipyard working in the present. They are currently renovating the Mayflower II. I especially liked the building dealing with whaling and all the sea shantys! The new "wave" building was disappointing, a display of toasters...really?? It is a lovely building though. This is a great family activity with many hands-on and child appropriate activities.

One of the best secrets about the Seaport. If you dock your boat here you have access to walk the campus at sunset and pretty much have the place to yourself. The exhibit in the "wave" building is temporary. I'm sure you will like our next exhibit coming in October. Thanks for the review!
