This experience was amazing! The tour guide, Nick, was very good and shared so much history about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. There was so much Nick shared that I definitely did not learn while studying US History. For example, women lost their citizenship if they married a foreign national and had to apply to reclaim their citizenship. The tour started a block from the National Archives. The group was small which allowed for an intimate tour. Nick explained the architecture and purpose of the archives, which was very interesting! Besides the bonus of a very knowledgeable tour guide, we got to skip the line at the entrance. Considering it’s spring break and Cherry Blossom season, this was worth the price of the tour!!! Inside Nick took us to the Declaration of Independence and explained how the document came about and who penned it and signed it. Nick also took us to look at the original Constitution of the United States and explained how that document came about. It was interesting to hear about the origins and the collaboration among the politicians and the many iterations it went through before being signed. I learned that the Constitution is based on the Magna Carta from 1287 from England. Inside the National Archives building there are several murals that represent the Founding Fathers. Nick told us the history and pointed out specific inclusions in the murals and what they represented. Overall, the tour was great and after we spent the rest of our time in the gift shop. Definitely worth it and I may gift this tour to my kids and grandkids if they visit DC. Enjoy!
