You cannot visit this museum. You can only be absorbed in it. This is a museum for people who do not believe they will ever enjoy a museum. The NMAAM is an explosion of history, technology, art and sound. The first step is to view a short movie that paints a panorama of the place of music in African American history. It is only an introduction, but is also an incendiary device. When the doors open you are propelled into a series of rooms that seduce you into the rudiments of music from slavery to the pews of their first churches to the Underground Railroad. From emancipation to the clubs and early schools all the way through Jim Crow and the Civil Rights era you see the thread of the epic story unfold. The crowning glory is the celebration of modern jazz, blues and pop that keeps you mesmerized until you exit the final exhibits exhausted and enlightened. The interactive displays become your professor as you find yourself composing your own blues number, joining a virtual gospel choir and dancing at a club. Make sure to complete your visit with the gallery of visual art. You can take your favorite audio and video numbers with you thanks to a wrist band that sends your new playlist to your personal electronic device to enjoy at home. You will not fully understand the term “time well spent” until you spend time at the MNAAM in Nashville, Tennessee. There is accessible parking in basement level facilities and a huge variety of great food upstairs at the Assembly Hall Food Mall. If you have a little energy left, you may want to visit a little spot called the Rhyman Auditorium across Broadway. I hear there are some great stories of wonderful times there too!

We walk in to a whole new world! You are given a wrist band to download music you like before you even start. The history and the music is amazing! There are so many interactive things to do. The staff was friendly, and they all seemed to enjoy their job and want to help you with anything. My daughters used artist they are familiar with to find new artists to listen to and enjoy. Best part.... it isball on head phones. You don't have to listen to other people's music choices only the ones you are interested in.
