We visited the museum over the Memorial Day weekend. Masks were required to visit the museum and the majority of visitors complied with that request. The museum is a wonderful addition to the Nashville scene with a very well done history of how African-American music has evolved, expanded and influenced other music genres. Naturally you think country when you go to Nashville, but learn about how African American music influenced country, too! The museum’s website suggests allowing 90 minutes, but if you’re a music fan and/or like diving into the details, then plan for at least 2 hours. What would be ideal is if they had an on-site café where you could take a break and then resume your browsing! Some sections (e.g., gospel/spiritual) had a short movie to provide more background to the genre and provide a chance to sit down. There were also lots of listening stations in each section to click and double click, if you’re interested, on musicians listening to information about them along with full-length songs that you can save to your RFID wristband creating a play list. Ask the front desk staff to (slowly!) explain how to use the RFID wristbands to download music. Multiple interactive booths and cubbies allow you to sing along with a gospel choir to Oh Happy Day, dance a disco routine, or create your own rap track. A fascinating and thoughtful museum for teens and older music fans. I would not recommend for elementary school age children unless done in a tour targeting that age group or you were planning to just hit the highlights and interactive sections.

If you like music, do visit this museum. Separate rooms cover types of music, starting with the African origins and tracing each type from its roots to the current music scene. There are opportunities to try one's own hand (or body) at dancing to music of each decade, singing with a gospel choir, and designing a rhythm background for hiphop or rap. In the 'Rivers' section, one can select a favorite musician from a fairly large group and hear a sample of their work, then click to display some of their peers, influencers, and followers; click on any one to hear that music and see more of the network. Informative and fun!
