What To Expect
1
French Quarter
St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 was founded in 1789 in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Due to unique environmental circumstances and centuries-old Catholic tradition, standard below ground burials could no longer take place and the people of New Orleans had to devise some creative solutions, and so the first St. Louis cemetery was born.
2
St. Louis Cemetery No. 1
Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, we are not allowed to enter St. Louis #1. We are viewing the tombs through the gates only. St Louis Cemetery No. 1 is an 8-block area in what used to be the uninhabitable outskirts of town, home to the tombs of plantation owners, architects, pirates, a chess champion, a voodoo queen and Nicolas Cage.

We got to the meet up spot and the guide tells us that the cemetery is closed so we will be walking around the outside instead. First: There is a 6 foot cement wall around the outside, you can’t even see in, so what’s the point? Second: turns out the cemetery has been closed for months bc of covid. They KNEW the cemetery was closed but still advertised going in! They never reached out about not being able to actually go inside. So wrong!

We had a walking tour with Carlo. He was a great guide. Very knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our questions. He's a fun personality as well. We visited during covid, so unfortunately we couldn't go in the cemetery which is why I'll give it 4 stars. However, it was nice it was only the 2 of us on the tour + Carlo.

We purchased this tour after reviewing the website which ensures that they were “unaffected by the coronavirus”. Once we arrived and began the tour we learned that there would be no entrance to the cemetery, instead we walked along the sidewalk outside. I understand that the cemetery closing is beyond their control, but they are intentionally misleading and defrauding people.
