What To Expect
1
Easton's Beach
Embark on this scenic walk at the Cliff Walk entrance by Easton's Beach. We'll learn a little about Easton's Beach as we set off on this journey, followed immediately by a short look at the Chanler. As we continue along, we'll dive into Newport's history, the effect of the Gilded Age, and the Cliff Walk's creation. We'll also learn a little about the "old-money" families, like the Vanderbilts and Astors, whose grand summer cottages line the Cliff Walk.
2
Ochre Court
Ochre Court will immediately arrest our eyes! This châteauesque mansion cost of $4.5 million... in 1892. And it certainly shows! Now the centerpiece of the Salve Regina University, this mansion isn't open for tours... but that won't stop us from learning all about it's rich and fascinating history!
3
The Breakers
Finally, we reach Newport's highlight: The Breakers. This Vanderbilt mansion is the biggest and the best of all of Newport's summer cottages -- and you can tell. We'll look past the gate, across the sweeping lawns, and up to the magestic and marvelous mansion's facade. We'll dive into the Vanderbilt backstory, the mansion's architectural wonders, and much more while here. We'll also explore the technological wonders at work beneath the Breakers.
4
Rosecliff
Rosecliff is next on our path along the Cliff Walk. This is arguably the most beautiful of the Newport Mansions, and it contains a rotating exhibition gallery on it's top floor. You can immediately spot this mansion by it's pink-and-white awning.
5
Marble House
Our journey now takes us past Marble House, one of the most opulent and magnificent of Newport's Mansions. This Gilded Age marvel is another Vanderbilt home, and actually has one of the most interesting histories of all the mansions here. We'll learn all about Marble House's powerful owner Alva and it's beautiful Chinese Tea House.
6
Rough Point Museum
As we continue along the Cliff Walk, we can catch a glimpse of an English Manorial style home through the trees: that's Rough Point. As we pass, we'll learn all about it's eccentric (and possibly dangerous) owner: Doris Duke.

It gave a few highlights as to properties and mansions. There could have been a lot more info given about the initial development of the area, the immigrants who developed the area, the many mansions along the walk. There was too much time in which vital information could have been shared

I have put a lot of additional information in each stoppage's “Learn More” section. Please check it out from home. In any case, I will happily exchange the tour with any of my other 100 tours in the US. Please let me know. This tour is yours for a lifetime. You can use it for pictures, a second review at home, sharing with friends, and for your next trip here.

This was definitely worth downloading to enhance the cliff walk. It made it more interesting to hear the stories behind the mansions as you were passing. There were some glitches where it would keep repeating, especially if you had to pause it in between the mansions on the walk. The walk itself was fairly easy but there is a point where you have to walk off huge rocks to get to the other side. It was nice to be able to park easily at Easton speech. Overall it was a positive experience and I would recommend it.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I'm thrilled that my tour added to your learning and that you enjoyed it. I’ll look into those oddities and fix them for future travelers. I also have 100 other self-guided tours for other parks, scenic drives, cities, and historic sites in the US — hopefully, you’ll get the chance to try them next time! Also, just to remind you, the tour you bought is yours for a lifetime. So, you can listen to it at home or on your next visit.

The commentary was good but the Cliff Walk is not the best way to see the Gilded Mansions if that is what you’re after. Most are not visible on the walk. You’re better off doing the free trolley tour and booking to go inside those open to the public.

Thanks for your feedback Kirrily! The first 12 stops on tour do not pass by any mansions. After stop 13, you come across eight mansions that face the ocean. So, all the mansion stories are after stop 12. A free trolley tour only takes you to the places. It does not tell you the stories. You have to go inside the mansions to hear the room-by-room story. I have created a separate tour of the mansions inside for the Preservation Society of Newport. If you enter any of their mansions, they will ask you to download the tour to go around it when you are inside. I would be more than happy to exchange your tour with one of my 100 other tours in the US — hopefully, you’ll get the chance to try them next time! Also, to remind you, the tour you bought is yours for a lifetime. So, you can listen to it at home or on your next visit.
