What To Expect
1
Easton's Beach
Embark on this scenic walk at the Cliff Walk entrance by Easton's Beach. We'll learn a little about Easton's Beach as we set off on this journey, followed immediately by a short look at the Chanler. As we continue along, we'll dive into Newport's history, the effect of the Gilded Age, and the Cliff Walk's creation. We'll also learn a little about the "old-money" families, like the Vanderbilts and Astors, whose grand summer cottages line the Cliff Walk.
2
Ochre Court
Ochre Court will immediately arrest our eyes! This châteauesque mansion cost of $4.5 million... in 1892. And it certainly shows! Now the centerpiece of the Salve Regina University, this mansion isn't open for tours... but that won't stop us from learning all about it's rich and fascinating history!
3
The Breakers
Finally, we reach Newport's highlight: The Breakers. This Vanderbilt mansion is the biggest and the best of all of Newport's summer cottages -- and you can tell. We'll look past the gate, across the sweeping lawns, and up to the magestic and marvelous mansion's facade. We'll dive into the Vanderbilt backstory, the mansion's architectural wonders, and much more while here. We'll also explore the technological wonders at work beneath the Breakers.
4
Rosecliff
Rosecliff is next on our path along the Cliff Walk. This is arguably the most beautiful of the Newport Mansions, and it contains a rotating exhibition gallery on it's top floor. You can immediately spot this mansion by it's pink-and-white awning.
5
Marble House
Our journey now takes us past Marble House, one of the most opulent and magnificent of Newport's Mansions. This Gilded Age marvel is another Vanderbilt home, and actually has one of the most interesting histories of all the mansions here. We'll learn all about Marble House's powerful owner Alva and it's beautiful Chinese Tea House.
6
Rough Point Museum
As we continue along the Cliff Walk, we can catch a glimpse of an English Manorial style home through the trees: that's Rough Point. As we pass, we'll learn all about it's eccentric (and possibly dangerous) owner: Doris Duke.

The Cliff Walk is incredible. PLEASE note: the red sections ARE HARD!!! But Why buy this guide when you can get it for free from the city?? It skips. It starts over. It repeats itself. Not a total waste as the bavkground information was good.

We created this tour for the simple reason that it offers more than free versions do — after all, you could always just use Wikipedia when vacationing! This is meant for visitors who want more. The “welcome” audio plays each time you re-start the app. However, this doesn’t mean the tour is starting over. It picks up where you are. The best practice is simply to keep the tour running while on the cliff walk because then the welcome won’t re-play. Other stories will appear to skip or repeat if directions like “pause and look” were not followed. The tour naturally works best when all instructions are followed. If you feel that the issues you faced were unique, please feel free to reach out! We care deeply about our tour and test it regularly across all types of devices. We’d love the opportunity to improve our app.

This was the perfect way to walk the Cliff Walk. There was so much interesting information offered. Without the self-guided tour, it would have just been a “pretty” walk. With the tour, we learned so much and had immediate answers to questions raised as we walked by.

That’s exactly what we were aiming for! I’m so glad to hear about your experience. We have a number of other self-guided tours (some walking, some driving) across the country at ActionTourGuide.com. Thanks again!!

Our walk was delightful. By pure accident we started backwards of the audio. The map showed some rough terrain at our start but the trail was worth it. The audio program worked automatically and was great informative company along the way. My only suggestion would be to somehow allow for a reverse option. Since we started at the end and worked our way towards the audio beginning we had to look back to match audio to visual. Great experience. I would recommend this self guided tour.

Good to know! As you mentioned, walking the Cliff Walk in reverse requires looking “backward” a bit but it’s great to know that this wasn’t a problem (and we will definitely consider a standalone “Reverse Tour” too)! If you enjoyed the self-guided experience, we have more tours at ActionTourGuide.com. Thanks again!
