We went on the Night Manta Ray Adventure with Hang Loose Boat Tours, LLC and it was probably the best tour we had during our stay!
Captain Simon was entertaining and very knowledgeable. Our guides, Jonah and Chris, were super attentive, very professional, fun, and made everyone feel very safe in and out of the water. We were incredibly impressed by how carefully they watched each and every thing going on in the water, keeping an eye on each guest to make sure they were safe and comfortable. Those two guys really worked hard and hustled the whole time! DONāT FORGET TO TIP YOUR CREW!!! š„°
The boat is a good size and very comfortable. It does take about 30 min to get out to the dive location, but it goes by quickly. If you are prone to motion sickness, eat a very light dinner, stay hydrated, and consider taking Dramamine or using a Scopolamine patch. Best to sit on bottom level of boat and closer to the back so you have less movement.
They provide you with a wetsuit top, and snorkel (no fins necessary). You will also be given a pool noodle to keep your legs more easily afloat in the water. After spending your time in the water (we spent approx 45 min which was plenty), you will come back into boat where you will be greeted by the captain, given opportunity for warm shower and change into dry/warm clothes. Before heading back to shore, you will also be given a snack and drink for the ride back. If you're lucky, they'll play some fun music on the speakers during the ride back!
Main take-away:
1. It is a fantastic experience that you will not regret!
2. Bring a towel, warm dry clothes to change into afterwards. Have your swimsuit on before you arrive at pier. Bring a sweatshirt or hoodie to wear on the ride back, you may be cold at that point!
3. Be sure to bring your camera in waterproof case, a GoPro, or rent a GoPro from them! You won't want to miss the amazing footage of these beautiful animals.
4. You DO need to be able to swim, though not very well. If you are a nervous swimmer, they will provide you will life vest and keep you closer to boat. It helps if you have practiced in a snorkel mask, even if it's just in a pool.
5. You DO need to be able to use a ladder coming out of the water and climb into the boat. (Not very hard, but you need to have basic mobility to do this.)
If you are planning on visiting Big Island, do NOT miss out on this experience! It is magical!! We will absolutely be using Hang Loose again when we are back on the island!!
