This was an amazing tour that is a must-do for your trip to Kona! We were greeted in a waiting area and signed a check-in form before boarding the ship. Before boarding you get a wetsuit top, then take off your shoes and go on the ship barefoot (don't worry the ship is super clean). We sat at the top front of the ship and prepared ourselves for a super bumpy ride due to reviews we read. In reality, the ride wasn't really rocky at all except for a few bigger waves. David was a great tour guide along with the other staff that came along. Before and after the ride to Manta Heaven, they shared extensive knowledge about the manta rays and answered everyone's questions. I also loved how the tour guide talked about conservation and the protection of manta rays through using less plastics. I learned that the island does not actually have plastic recycling available.
Once we got into the water, we had to wait for a bit for the light on the surfboard we were all holding onto to attract enough phytoplankton to bring over the mantas. The plankton almost seem like bubbles and sometimes there are so many it's a bit hard to see through the water. This made the first manta that came around a huge surprise since it just popped up only a few inches away from my face. This may seem a bit scary or surprising at first, but the mantas are so good at avoiding people and they do not touch anyone. After the first manta came around, they kept feeding on plankton and stayed for a very long time, even past when we were called to go back on the ship. It was an absolutely amazing experience!!
The water was a bit cold though but being shoulder to shoulder with everyone made it slightly warmer. I would recommend getting your own full-body wetsuit if you are prone to getting cold. Also bring towels to use after and possibly a windbreaker. We got some snacks and drinks before and after the boat ride too. Overall, I would totally recommend this trip to anyone visiting Big Island. It was 2.5 hours as advertised and I would love to do this tour again if I visit Big Island again in the future. Thanks to everyone that made this tour possible!
