We had the Night Manta Ray Adventure a few days after a very positive snorkeling experience with a different tour company (SeaQuest). As a result, our expectations were high for Hang Loose Boat Tours. Unfortunately, Hang Loose did not deliver the same satisfying experience. We arrived for our 8:30pm adventure about 30 minutes early. The meeting place is a dimly lit pavilion near the harbor. There were no company representatives around and the public bathrooms were locked. When the crew did arrive, they provided masks, air tubes, and wetsuit vests. Unfortunately, none of their masks provided any lens correction.
We took a rough and unsettling 25 minute boat ride. It was fully-dark and we were rapidly going over large ocean swells en route to an area near the KOA airport. The best part of the adventure was watching the manta rays. You cannot touch them, but they can and do sometimes inadvertently contact you. Getting back to the boat in the dark and in rolling seas was a bit challenging. After a brief snack, we rode through the rough seas back to the harbor arriving around 11pm. Our family enjoyed seeing the manta rays, but everything else about the experience was underwhelming and a bit disappointing.
