We are so grateful to Ed and Elena with Arctic Night Tours for helping us fulfill our dream of seeing the Aurora in all it's glory. We have seen the Northern Lights in Halifax NS and even in GA, but nothing compares to the views we had on this tour. While we were in Fairbanks, we saw the Aurora from our Air BnB, Cleary Summit, Chena Lake and Pike's. It was beautiful each time, but it was STUNNING when we user Arctic Night Tours. If you only do one tour on your trip to Fairbanks, this is the one to do. We were picked up at our hotel, in a clean, new Sprinter Van. Ed drove one and Elena drove the other, so there were 20 people total on the tour, 10 per van. They use a variety of ways to determine where the best chance of a good viewing might be, which is not the Kp you see on the usual apps. Elena told us what to look for to determine Aurora viewing. We relaxed, while she drove on the icy road (very safely) and we stopped in a big clearing. They had 2 professional cameras and tripod set ups, along with a 3rd for a live/ time lapse video. The skies opened up and put on such an amazing show! They were taking so many photos, I just put my phone away and enjoyed every minute of the incredible colors, movement and "dancing" of the Aurora. My husband had rented a special camera lens for the night, and he was able to get some beautiful shots, and then he relaxed and enjoyed, because Ed and Elena were on the job getting photos and video. They were so fun and friendly and encouraged us to get our photos taken in with Aurora in the background so that we would have forever memories of our very special night.
We waited for the moon to rise (full moon) and after 2 + hours of non stop dancing northern lights and a full moon, we headed back - arriving back to our hotel about 3 a.m.
By the time we left, Ed and Elena felt like old friends. They had water and snacks for the ride back. If I had to choose only 1 activity in Fairbanks, this would be the one.
You can't go wrong with Arctic Nights - if they feel there is little/ no chance to see the lights, they will give you the option to reschedule. I referred my friend to them and Elena was very honest - the only night our friends could go, the chances were very low, so Elena let them know that up front and kept their number in case the forecast changed. My friend appreciated her honesty so much.
Dress warmly! The van is warm but to really enjoy the Aurora, you MUST have proper gear. We rented ours and were so glad we had the -40 degree gear. We were able to stay outside the whole time without discomfort. Viewing from within the van just doesn't compare to standing outside and watching the changing sky.
Arctic Night Tours is a MUST-DO when visiting Fairbanks.
