Went and did the East Village pub crawl with four other people, so safety wasn't really an issue. Our group leader was a young blonde woman (her name escapes me) who did a fine job of keeping everyone together.
The first bar was Coyote Ugly. It was... not what I was expecting. Grungy, underwear hanging from the rafters. I never saw the bar tenders visibly wash their bodies in between body shots. What the crap? I'm a fine of dive bars, believe me! This was just...awkward. I was happy we moved on. (From the Pub Crawl Site) "Events begin in bars with a relatively calm atmosphere for registration & meet-and-greet, and then increase in intensity." Coyote Ugly? Really? I guess that's calm for NYC, though. I would have rather met in the second bar, honestly (Solas). Whatever. It was weird.
The other bars were cool (Solas & Bar None). The drink specials that came with the crawl weren't too bad, but you gotta expect to dish out some cash. First, tip your bar tenders. Second, the specials that come with the pub crawl are usually like "Drink plus a free shot" or "Free shot with a purchase of beer" so you know how that goes. The pub crawl gets you admission to Webster Hall. Which I could have done without but I'm not really a "club" type of guy. Wasn't expecting to get searched, either, which kind of threw our night off because our friend had some... contraband on her. (Apparently Zantac looks like ecstasy when it's a plastic bag.)
Fun night. Cool way to see some sights.
