You’ll spend much of your time paddling along the St John’s River, Florida’s longest River. The area we were in was a calm relaxing time on the water. From what I understand, Mar-Oct is not an ideal time to see Manatees because it’s a bit too warm for them in the spring. We went in April on a chilly day but saw maybe 6 from a short distance. Check the website for the best times to see Manatees if that’s an important part of your kayak trip. Astrid was our tour guide and had an immense knowledge of the local wildlife. The meetup was easy to find using the gps and parking wasn’t a problem.

Our tour guide Jimmy was awesome! He knew everything about the area and explained everything from the plants to the animals. We even saw 3 young manatee up by the spring (2 of them were just released from foster care and another one joined them). It was nice to see a "manatee watcher" gal (a volunteer position that keeps a close eye on the manatee and educates the people as they come through) to help keep the newly released young ones safe. Afterwards we paddled down or up the river (not really sure). We saw a lot of gators swimming in the waters. It was fun watching them poke their heads up to watch us and then go back under. Down by the lagoon/ end of the cove we went through there was a deer which Jimmy said he never saw before. We also saw a lot of turtles in that area and then a gator that went right under our kayak and did some splashing around, trying to get away from us, I am sure! It was nerve wracking to say the least but I am sure he was just as scared. On the way back we saw a bird that had a snake in his mouth and then proceeded to fly away and above our kayak. I was thankful he didn't drop the snake on us!!! This tour was absolutely amazing and my most favorite part of our visit to Florida. I highly recommend the tour as there is so much to learn from your guide rather than going on your own.

We loved this kayak trip. We saw so much wildlife; birds, alligators, and of course manatees. Bill was our guide. He is very knowledgeable about the wildlife, the plants and trees and the area in general. We enjoyed his company very much. This is such a great way to see the "real" Florida. It was one of the best things we have ever done on a vacation. I recommend bringing a water bottle and sunscreen. Our 13 year old went with us and she had an awesome time too. It was her favorite thing we did in Florida this year.
