On a father-son vacation to visit the Grand Canyons, we booked a hot air balloon ride with Rainbow Ryders out of Phoenix, AZ. I could not be more disappointed and I will explain why.
On March 5, 2020, the ride started from a common site for hot air balloon companies along W Carefree Pwy in Phoenix. There were at least eight other companies that launched from this site within minutes of each other. The other balloons rose and while gaining altitude caught a west wind and floated across a local ridge and Interstate 17 and then out of sight, where they landed, I do not know. I later found out, that depending on the wind speed, some of the other hot air balloon companies flew 3 to 5 miles or farther.
Our ride with Rainbow Ryders rose and caught a low-level east wind, travel a short distance, gained altitude, caught a west wind, flew a short distance, descended catching the low-level east wind again and landed within a few feet of where we took off. This flight profile was explained to me by Mr Scott Applemen of Rainbow Ryders as a “square” flight profile. In my opinion, this was nothing less than an open-air elevator ride and not a hot air balloon adventure, true the views at elevation were very scenic.
Upon expressing my disappointment to Mr Applemen, he offered a voucher at one of their other locations which I did not accept. I only requested that future costumers be informed they may not be getting what they expect from a hot air balloon ride from Rainbow Ryders.

Again, we are very sorry that you were disappointed in the flight path. With ballooning, it is unlike most travel tours in that every flight experience is unique. We advertise that as part of the charm of our sport and we never want anyone to feel as if they were misled. It is actually a rare thing to land at the same place you launched from, and often cause for celebration. Thus, we thank you for this opportunity to inform any others reading this that the flight path will be different for every balloon, even if you launched from the same site, at the same time, on the same day due to the winds that Mother Nature provides.
Your flight, in particular, went up to 5,000 feet, providing miles of views of the Sonoran Desert. Even still, we don't like anyone leaving disappointed and thus did offer to remedy your experience with the chance for another flight that was hopefully more aligned with your expectations. We do our best to make sure every experience is worthy of a bucket list and again, we do apologize that your expectations were not met with your flight.
