Tom did a wonderful job of adapting the tour to the interests of my 11-year-old son. He filled the day with interesting stories and sites that we would never have found on our own. When my son was getting hangry toward the end of the day, he took us to grab lunch before dropping us off at our next destination in the city.

Julie, I'm glad that you shared all three generations of your family with me. Now we have to find out how many people your husband and me know in common given are very similar backgrounds. I'm happy that you enjoyed the day.- Tom

Booked this as a birthday excursion for my husband as he enjoys American history. He loved it and I found out I do too! Thomas is a wealth of knowledge and he enthusiastically shares it. Our day included a trip to a lesser visited site and it was a highlight of the tour. I highly recommend the Civil War tour and truthfully I would go on any other tour with Thomas as I am sure it would be excellent as well. I will be booking him again when I return to DC.

Kathleen, Your review is too kind as I know the both of you are so well travelled. Iā€™m particularly pleased that you enjoyed the adventure as well, even though you were not the ā€˜target audience.ā€™ Iā€™m looking forward to your return trip so we can discover more of Washington. Tom

Excellent and informative, this tour covered a gamut of tangible Civil War experiences that took place near Washington/Alexandria, from intimate to historically game changing, from empirical history to thoughtfully conceptual reflections upon the war and its impact on both US and global society that extends to the present. Not only was Tom's commentary always relevant and accurate, it was the tip of the iceberg of a university-level depth of historical knowledge . He could talk of the expected details of sites, battles, dates and heroes, but in conversation with me discuss tactics, weaponry, logistics, social history, lesser known military figures, even historiographical trends in literature and research around the war and histories of curation and research at the visited sites. He also contextualised the ACW via 20th century military history, prior US history and present day social altitudes. As a veteran, he acted as a valid ambassador for the very specific histories and codes of the US military. He can cater for newbies and equally for civil war fanpersons like myself.
