On Friday July 11th my adult son and daughter and I booked a rock climbing excursion with Front Range Climbing Company. I had purchased this at a charity auction thinking it should be on my bucket list. It was the first climb for my daughter and me. My son had a brief experience 20 years ago. It did not disappoint. Lee was our guide and he was outstanding. He was professional , highly competent and was able to talk us past our fears. We were told we were friction climbing which meant we were roped up and were climbing 70-80 sandstone faces in the magnificent Garden of the Gods-Rated the best park in the US. To us the hand and footholds were pretty sparse but Lee guided us up the face and encouraged us to make it to the top, which we might not have done without his leadership and encouragement. The entire exercise was an act of faith/trust. Trust in Lee and trust in the equipment. That was magnified when we rappelled down the face after the climb, running across the face of the rocks. We then each rappelled from the top, which was a different act of faith since we had to blindly back off the top of the rock and self-rappel down the face. This all relates to the professionalism of Lee and the trust we put in him. I have acrophobia and he was able to get me past that. Rumor has it that Lee is known around the company as the "beast". He is incredibly fit, does wild yoga poses on rock ledges and in general just inspires confidence, At 70 it was probably a one time deal for me but if I do it again it will be with Lee.

We were running out of ideas of things to do during our week long stay in Colorado Springs so I turned to my trusty TripAdvisor and found rock climbing at Garden of the Gods! When I mentioned it everyone immediately told me to call and get more information! I talked with Bill at 10am and he set us up with Nathan at 1pm that same day! We were extremely excited! We weren't able to climb at Garden of the Gods because it had rained the past few days but we ended up going to Cheyenne Canyon near the Starsmore Discovery Center. We ended up getting rained out after filling out our paperwork but Nathan was really awesome and told us he would be willing to set up another time on Friday morning and to just call Bill at the main line. We got everything set up for Friday morning and finally no rain! Nathan brought a helper so we could have 2 lines set up to run at the same time. It was so fun to watch Nathan climb up first and set up the course because he was doing it without any assistance! We ended up doing 4 - 40 to 50 foot climbs and then he set up a 110 foot climb. Only one out of the 6 of us had ever actually rock climbed the rest of us had just done rock walls so we were truly beginners! Nathan and Stephen were so helpful and patient when we got stuck they encouraged us and gave us tips along the way and wouldn't let us quit when they knew we could really do it! The last climb was awesome! We couldn't even see the top from where we started but once we got up there it was an amazing sight! We ended up climbing 5 spots in 4 hours with 6 people climbing Nathan said that was a fantastic amount! We all agreed we got our $80/person worth! It was fun for me to watch my niece and nephews conquer a wall they didn't think they could! We had an amazing experience!

Patrick was our FRCC climbing guide and he was phenomenal. Besides being a skilled and experienced climber has the heart of a teacher, and knows exactly what to say, how to say it, and when to say it. I am 63 and my wife is 53 and are are physically fit--but we never planned on technical climbing. So far, we've done two climbs and find it more satisfying (and thrilling) than skiing, and safer than whitewater kayaking. We've watched from the ground as others scale the same rocks as we did, and marvel that we actually did that! As for Garden of The Gods, the vistas are spectacular. Don't miss it. If you think--if just for a second--that you'd like to try it, then go for it. Ask for Patrick. You won't regret it.
