Privateer Schooner Sailing Tour in Salem Sound

Overview
FAME is annually the #1-rated boat in Salem and one of the top-rated activities in the entire town, per TripAdvisor. Don't miss the very best of what Salem has to offer! There's more to our town than witches!

FAME is a full-scale replica of a privateer schooner from the War of 1812 that captured over 20 prizes! We sail up to five times a day between May and October from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem.

On board our traditional gaff-rigged schooner, you'll get a chance to raise the sails and even steer the boat as we sail Salem Sound and talk about the fisherman, traders, and privateers that played such a central role in the saga of Salem, of Massachusetts, and of the young United States.

This is a great hands-on adventure for all ages — but you can also just sit back and enjoy a beverage and take it all in as we cruise past the historic forts and lighthouses of Salem, Beverly, and Marblehead.

We visit Salem each year and we always include the Schooner Fame on our must do list. We like the sunset cruise. After that we have dinner on the wharf. It's relaxing and a lot of fun. Highly recommend it.

Took the sunset cruise on the Schooner Fame while on business in Salem. If you enjoy the water and want a sailing experience and tour of the Salem harbor this is a must do. The overall experience was fantastic! The crew and Captain are very friendly and and willing to go the extra mile to make your experience enjoyable. You can sit back and relax and enjoy the ride, experience sailing as is was over 100 years ago and take in the scenic views or you can make it totally interactive and get involved in the sailing experience. I chose the interactive, the crew let me hoist the sails and the captain let me take the helm (under his supervision) and navigate under sail thru the harbor. The boat is an authentic replica of an 1812 schooner. Plenty of room to move around with a calm and enjoyable ride. the day we went out there was plenty of send with rolling waves but the ride itself was very calm and smooth. If you have a love of the water this is a must do cruise!

While in Salem, I took the evening cruise on the Privateer FAME. Definately an A+ for everything about the ship and crew: this is a great experience for those who have never sailed. The crew is very knowledgeable and eager to share their experiences, and are also great with the junior sailors aboard. The view of the bay is terrific, especially on the sunset cruise, and there is even a demonstration of the replica 'guns' aboard the ship during the sail. If you think you will get seasick, think again; the sail is very gentle and relaxing. I would call this a 'must-do' trip while you were in Salem.
