I'm into seismology, but this was a fascinating tour regardless of one's background in the subject matter. The San Andreas Fault, surely the most famous geological fault in the world, runs for about 750 miles, starting roughly at the Salton Sea and running northwest until it terminates in the Pacific Ocean off Cape Mendocino. This unique tour takes you to a portion of the fault near its southern terminus. Many people don't realize that at this section, the San Andreas is about a mile wide! We spent a substantial portion of the tour actually being inside the fault, and the rest of the time we were in the fault "zone." I was shown features of the landscape that resulted from the North American and Pacific tectonic plates (which meet at the San Andreas Fault) grinding together. I also saw the beautiful Painted Canyon in the Fault Zone. My guide, Colin, was highly knowledgeable and did an excellent job explaining what I was seeing. I also received outstanding service from Big Wheel, including its owner Evan, when arranging the tour. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and I learned a lot!
