San Diego Liberty Station: From Barracks to Brews Small Group Tour

Overview
The former Naval Training Center in San Diego has transformed itself into Liberty Station and this is your opportunity to learn important sailor skills without having to drop and give us 20! We'll explore the historic core of the area, and see the buildings that help transform new recruits into sailors and sailors into specialists.

We'll start at the USS Brave art piece, explore the former Camp John Paul Jones, visit the former Command Center, the former detention camp, and pay tribute to the 52 submarines lost during World War II. We'll also see the modern golf course (and talk about who made it their final resting place), what Liberty Station has in common with Balboa Park, and learn some skills. After you pass muster, we'll celebrate your "graduation" with a certificate of completion and a beer.

What To Expect
1
Liberty Station
Known as the Cradle of the Navy, this former Naval Training Center is now one of San Diego's most vibrant mulit-use neighborhoods.
2
ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station
We'll spend most of our time in the ARTS DISTRICT as we explore the naval past of this former training center, and discover the many artistic and cultural resources that are here now.
3
Ingram Plaza
Named after the first enlisted man killed during World War I and posthumously given the Medal of Honor, this park houses the original flag pole and was the site of the first detention camp on base.
4

These memorial stones and trees pay tribute to the 52 submarines lost during World War II. We'll take a moment to remember those lost at this memorial, located on the former Preble Field.
5
Liberty Public Market
We'll take a quick look at some murals here and how the space was transformed from a commissary to San Diego's original modern-day food hall.

I liked Jennifer's knowledge of the sites, her down to earth humor and sharing her insights about being a tour guide. Because we were a small family unit of four, we should have asked for more "photo ops" during our tour. Good day to remember!

I loved showing you around Liberty Station - it's one of my favorite places and your reason for taking the tour made it just that much more special. Thanks so much for joining me and for taking the time to leave nice feedback here. Both are greatly appreciated!

Learning the history of Liberty Station from it's first opening, through WWII and into the current use was great. Knowledgeable guide (Jennifer) and fun experience!
