On previous trips to Milwaukee I had visited almost all the other museums and attractions in the area. Driving from South Dakota, I needed another rest stop on my route back to Chicago. A friend recommended I see the Grohmann Museum. I never heard of it! I I have toured 157 countries and every art museum within. How good could a classical German art collection be when I am a solid fan of Impressionism and a long time member of the Art Institute of Chicago? What a surprise and humbling experience. I now recognize my judgmental attitude after seeing this extraordinary collection. It opened my eyes to the importance of this type of classical art and it's unique use of light, color, and perspective that I didn't realize existed during the time period when most of these paintings were created. I learned about and gained new respect for the life and work of the people during that era.The fire in the furnaces, and other scenes from that time were memorable. I had 1 1/2 hours on my parking meter that I never expected would run out! This was a most unexpected experience.
