Overview
This guided tour is the ideal way to begin exploring the roots of the author's life and work. It is here that Ernest Hemingway was born in a second floor bedroom on July 21, 1899. This Queen Anne home was built in 1890 by his maternal grandparents and was the first home in Oak Park to have electricity. The homes restoration returned the house to its 1890s’ Victorian heritage; ensuring that your experience of the furnishings and stories told reflect the young man who lived there.

Learning how much Hemingways family, particularly his grandfather, influenced him as a writer. Also understanding the possible causes of his mental illness.

Very interesting tour and we learned alot about Hemingway and his family. Our tour guide was excellent and answered all of our questions, including 'is the house haunted?' (No) The society has done a wonderful job of bringing the home back to its original glory days and there are many interesting artifacts throughout the home. The house is in a beautiful area of Oak Park. Free parking was available right on the street and we just walked a short distance to the home. Purchasing tickets online was very easy. We were unable to make the original time we scheduled, and changing the time to a later tour that day was simple, and we received an email confirming the reschedule. Due to horrendous traffic, we were a few minutes late, but they waited for us, as I informed them we were on our way. Much appreciated.

The docent was unbelievably good with a multi-pronged narration to the person called Ernest Hemingway. She was open to all questions and clearly was passionate in her explanation about the family, social circumstances and historical context. I am left with an adjusted understanding of Hemingway who was far more complex than i had previously known.
